College Hockey:
RedHawks the new No. 1 team atop men’s poll

Miami is the new No. 1-ranked team in the USCHO.com Division I Men’s Poll after their two-game sweep of Northern Michigan last weekend.

Last week’s top team, Boston College, lost for the first time this season and drop down to the second spot.

North Dakota fell from No. 2 all the way to No. 8 this week.

Minnesota-Duluth, up to No. 3 from six, received one first place vote, while No. 6 Boston University, up from No. 8, received two first place votes.

Other big jumpers are Michigan State (up to No. 11 from No. 16), Maine (up five spots to No. 7) and Notre Dame (up to No. 13 from No. 17).

New to the rankings this week is No. 20 Rensselaer, a team that received votes last week. RPI and Minnesota occupy the 20th spot together as each received a total of 57 points from the voters.

why is yale ranked 5th when they haven’t even played yet….over rated!

    • Roving Reporter

Are you saying teams who have not played yet should not be ranked? In that case, you must be completely against pre-season rankings. More likely, you just have no clue what rankings are for. Why don’t you wait until November until you start bitching.

Or come up with a reason Yale should not be 5th other than they haven’t played yet. Why aren’t you complaining about Cornell being ranked or that Union is only No. 16 despite dominating their competition?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KBVOP7JEIJTGTBGPEMTI67KVLU J

first of all this isnt pre-season. second maybe union needs to actually play teams that are good. most of college hockey is a joke. the only confrences that matter are wcha, ccha and hockey east. oh and try and relax a little bit why fight when you know north dakota is going to take off after christmas and dominate

        • Clown Show

You obviously don’t follow logic well. He never said it was preseason, but was rather making a logical inference from what the initial poster said.

Since when does “most of college hockey” fall outside the WCHA, CCHA, and HEA? By my count, they account for 33 of the 58 teams in D1, or roughly 57%. What the ECAC has that those other three conferences lack is parity top to bottom. The bottom teams in those three leagues are the joke, if anything.

Do you remember Yale spanking NoDak in the tourney last year? While playing a goalie for the first time since November?

We will see who is a joke come April.

haha, i think you are all hilarious, I LOVE coming on here and reading all these little comment fights people have. So thank you ALL for being my entertainment on my lunch break today. But when MAINE walks away a National Title this year, you can say you heard it hear first, because its going to happen!!! (i hope). Good Luck to all the teams during the chase! and keep bickering between each other, its great! (though some people are clearly not as smart as they think they are)

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KBVOP7JEIJTGTBGPEMTI67KVLU J

spanked!?!?!?! LOL that hilarious yale was lucky to get out of that third period. its not easy to be the dominant program in all of hockey and i doubt yale will get passed the first round

        • RP

I would not say that Yale spanked North Dakota, it was only a 1 goal game. North Dakota under estimated the speed of yale and could not recover. If those 2 same teams played 10 times The Sioux would win 7.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QD7KSGIYMAEFXG7Z3S6CBUEAOM John Smith

I agree and disagree with your post. I do think that North Dakota will dominate after Christmas, but don’t say that teams outside of Hockey East, WCHA, and the CCHA are jokes. Teams outside of those leagues can be very good, and their fans actually care about the game, and their team. Yale, Union, and Cornell are very good teams that are all in the ECAC, and Colgate is always competitive with these teams when they play, so don’t’ count Colgate out. I suggest you do more research before you make a post, because you look look a fool if you don’t.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KBVOP7JEIJTGTBGPEMTI67KVLU J

well actually i dont look like a fool. put statistics..include championships wins between teams and add fan support. LOL wcha and ccha ok you can add hockey east and maybe cornell and thats college hockey in a nut shell. dont talk about those teams that are ok every few years but are mediocre 95% of the time save me the sob story

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QD7KSGIYMAEFXG7Z3S6CBUEAOM John Smith

whatever you say pal, but Yale beat North Dakota, and this is a new season, lets see what happens but don”t be ignorant and see Cornell,WCHA and the CCHA and Hockey East are all of college hockey, so lets what happens.

the ecac is an inferior league…why should they be ranked…perhaps they should be ranked in d3

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QD7KSGIYMAEFXG7Z3S6CBUEAOM John Smith

wow that is one of the most uneducated comments I have ever heard, yale beat north dakota, and then lost 9-7 to BC thats pretty good, also cornell made the tourny last year, and union and colgate are good teams, that will most likely be ranked. And lets not forget quinnipiac who was ranked in the top 15 last year for a good month and a half. Also Colgate beat Wisconsin in a shootout two years ago, and is playing BC this year in december, we’ll see what happens. The ECAC has good teams and is not a joke, tell me what team you like, and we’ll see how good they are.

          • Anonymous

i was at that game and ND looked terrible and probably would have lost to Holy Cross or Uconn had they been in the tournament. Yale was overrated just like the league that they are in…doubt they’ll make the tournament this year

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QD7KSGIYMAEFXG7Z3S6CBUEAOM John Smith

One they wouldn’t have lost to UConn or Holy Cross, and how do you explain BC letting up 7 goals to yale, thats pretty good for yale, and you should do more research on the ECAC before you comment, also I got a feeling they will make the tourny this year, and Union will probably join them. Also on December 30 we will see if Colgate an ECAC team can knock off BC a Hockey East team, currently #1 and the national champs

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KBVOP7JEIJTGTBGPEMTI67KVLU J

yale barely beat the sioux……and got embarresed by a high scoring and incredibly weak defensive team in bc…………….ummmmm where were you going with that again?? oh yeah both those teams are lame its ok north dakota will keep producing nhl studs

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QD7KSGIYMAEFXG7Z3S6CBUEAOM John Smith

true yale’s D sucked but they scored more goals against BC the national champs than Wisonsin and Miami did combined in the tourny.

  • MAINEGoBlue

    completely agreed

  • fcc56

These early-season polls are of little value other than as entertainment, but it is (perhaps appropriately) amusing to see BC be displaced after losing to a 4-1-0, top-15 team (having previously swept the then-number 6 on the road) by a team whose opponents are a combined 3-8-4, including one that is 0-4-1.

I guess quality of opponent doesn’t count for much. ;)

    • RP

I agree, but for some reason the last 2 or 3 years the voters have a hardon for Miami. I think they are very over rated and it seems to get proven when April comes around. I think the CCHA is one of the weakest conferences in the country but for some reason people think that beating Ferris state, bowling green, Ohio State, Alaska, Lake Superior State, Western Michigan and Northern Michigan 20 times a year actually means something.

      • Just Facts

Last four Frozen Four appearances by Conference:

        Hockey East – 6
        CCHA – 5
        WCHA – 3
        CHA – 1
        Atlantic Hockey – 1

One of the weakest in the country, really?

        • Steve Philbrick

Why introduce the facts? You ruined the argument… hehehe.

          Thanks for posting this, really.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KBVOP7JEIJTGTBGPEMTI67KVLU J

numbers are misleading if you dont explain which teams make it but i agree with you none the less wcha and ccha and hockey east IS college hockey…for whatever college hockey is to this country lol

      • GS

I’m sorry but I believe that Miami has lost to only two teams in the NCAA tournament in the last six years…. This tells me something… Miami consistently plays good teams, and performs well against them. Two of the best goaltenders in college hockey, one of if not the best team defense in college hockey and a deep, talented bunch of forwards makes Miami a serious contender this year just like they have been the last three years. If the CCHA is the weakest conference in the Country, why have they been to the frozen four more than all other conferences except the HEA in the last four years…?

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QD7KSGIYMAEFXG7Z3S6CBUEAOM John Smith

I agree that Miami is very good, but saying that they have only lost to two teams in the NCAA tourny, in the last 6 years which makes them “great” proves nothing since they haven’t won a national championship at all in the program’s history, which means that Miami has only made it to the NCAA tourny twice in the last six years, and this means they have lost both times which is quite weak for a “great” team. The CCHA is a very challenging conference but they have only won 1 championship in the last decade. Not very good for a league that is held in such a high standard by some, which is you.

          • MU

They have been to the NCAA tournament the last 6 years, and lost to BC or BU all of those years. If you look at Miami’s History, they virtually had very few great seasons till Enrico took over.

CCHA is won of the toughfest conferences!! No wonder miami made it that far! GO REDHAWKS!!!

im a hardcore sioux and i believe umd has one of the best lines in college hockey history this year cant wait to see the two teams play

  • Stal102

Great pic to go along with the story was that from the 7-1 beatdown BC put on Miami last year?

Who put a beatdown on BC saturday?? MERRIMACK!!!

  • Lordoftherink9

Why do people have a hardon or Miami. They have been in the Frozen 4 the last 2 seasons. More wins in the last five years than any other program in College Hockey. This year they split with No. 10 UNH, Went on the road to No. 6 SCSU (win/tie), and took care of business against a young but talented No 22. NMU.

Wait til April? Miami will be there again for a chance to compete for a National Title.

  • Coryholkesvig

Nothing against the Yale or and of the CHAA teams but the NCAA tourn. should be a best of three like the saying goes even the bad get lucky sometimes

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KBVOP7JEIJTGTBGPEMTI67KVLU J

i actually agree with you….im not to big on the week break between the frozen four. play out a three game series throughout. hockey is about routine and it needs to be played almost everyday
