College Hockey:
Gadowsky to lead Penn State’s final club season

Incoming Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky will take over the school’s club team in its final season before a transition to varsity status.

Penn State Icers coach Scott Balboni has agreed to step down as coach to make way for Gadowsky and his staff, the school announced Friday.

“I am grateful to Coach Balboni for agreeing to allow my staff and I the opportunity to begin coaching the Penn State hockey team right away,” Gadowsky said in a statement. “It will give us the opportunity to evaluate the players and work with the team in preparation for the move to varsity play in 2012-13 and the inaugural Big Ten Conference season in 2013-14. We are excited to build on Penn State’s strong ice hockey tradition.”

Kind of a crap deal to boot the coach that built the program, no?

good thing he didn’t build the program then, eh. the penn state team (as it exits now) has been around for 30 years – started in 1971 – and Balboni’s only been there for the past 5.

I think it is great to have the best coaching possible for the PSU Club this coming season to help the program get its best possible start when the 2012-13 season arrives a season from now!It will give more of the club players a chance to to play on the 1st NCAA Division team in the 2012-13 season.Coach Godowsky and his staff are on campus this year so might as well be doing wwwwwhat they do best and that is coaching hockey.Best of luckand let’s keep pushing college hockey. We need at least another 20 schools doing what PSU IS DOING.Mike Olson PS. Once again a big thank you to Terry and Kim Pegula, and also to Paul and Nancy Silvas. These are the people who have made it happen at PSU.

Your comment is funny…none of those kids stand a chance playing Division I. Granted some of them could of played at good D3 schools, but there is a reason that they are there playing club.

Not entirely true. It’s like when guys used to say AHL guys couldn’t compete in the NHL. Guys step up. Granted it will probably be only one or two. I played juniors with guys who played D3 and club strictly for regional reasons. They could have played third line DI but didn’t want to go that far from home. It was a personal choice for those guys. Some of the PSU guys may have made a similar choice or just really want to go to that school. Don’t be surprised if one or two make the squad next year.
