Report: Big Ten chooses two-week postseason

The Big Ten will use a two-week postseason format when the league debuts in the 2013-14 season, according to a report.

The Wisconsin State Journal reported that the six-team league will award first-round byes to the top two teams in the standings. The third-place team will host the sixth-place team and the fourth-place team will host the fifth-place team in first-round, best-of-three series.

The next weekend, the league regular season champion will host the semifinals and finals.

Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin will form the Big Ten.

    I will bet anyone a substantial amount of money that NU finishes bottom 12 in D-1. They were below average last year and lost their top 4 point/goal scorers. Are they bringing in any freshmen phenoms? They’re only hope is that the rest of hockey east is garbage, which they might be considering the amount of talent that is either graduating or leaving for the pros. I am sad to say that I think Hockey East dominance is over for the next season or two.

  They don’t get a home game because they get a bye into the semi-finals. That must really suck. I like how all of the geniuses here are posting that this tournament format sucks yet no one has come up with any sort of better ideas. Wonder why that is?

    Jacob, one of the bonuses of finishing in the top half of your league is you get to host home playoff games (extra money for the school, extra home game for graduating seniors, extra game for the fans to attend) which makes everyone happy. To remove that seems pretty stupid. And I think everyone here is speaking more against the league in general. This silly playoff format is just the icing on the cake. The Big 10 hockey conference is the most narrow minded, greedy and thrown together rush job in college hockey. Its bad for college hockey as a whole.

  CCHA and WCHA do things a bit differently so it can’t be like they do in both. The format that was voted on is almost exactly the same as the CCHA format except it applies to 6 teams.

the Big Ten has 12 football / basketball schools and the Big 12 has ten football / basketball schools. Why should their hockey be any better than their math?

I’m not sure why everyone is so against this. I am excited for this League. As for the tournament, I don’t know why it is so crazy. It is basically the CCHA tournament format scaled down for 6 teams. It would be better than doing the stupid WCHA format where you play and then you get byes.
