College Hockey:
Planning begins on annual Minnesota Cup tournament at Xcel Energy Center

It’s still just in the early stages, but according to a report in the Star Tribune, in late January 2014, the five Division I schools in Minnesota will play in a tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.

“We are very close to getting it done,” Minnesota AD Joel Maturi said in the story. “We have to work out the finances and make sure everybody agrees to what it is and move forward.”

Maturi said that the five Minnesota schools have all agreed to the general format, but nothing has been signed. Minnesota would probably be in the field every year with three of the other four teams participating on a rotating basis.

The tournament is being called the Minnesota Cup for now, added Maturi.

A great idea – not only do you have the MN DI programs playing each other you also have 3 conferences squaring off against each other for bragging rights.

If well promoted and the right people get involved it could become a good event.

  • mountainsun

perfect, it’s just like the final five, minus all the annoying sioux fans

    • Guest

You mean the annoying Sioux fans that make the tourney each and every year? They travel better than any team in the WCHA and always have a better turnout then the rest of the fan base.

      • homer

Yeah, obvious that North Dakota doesn’t provide much competition for the entertainment dollar.

        • nogofer

Excessive amount of hardware attests to the contrary.

          • WCHAFAN

How?  It only proves that in the past you have had some championship teams.  The argument here is that there is nothing else to do in NoDak…  Gee Ma, time to drive down to dat big city thingey and cheer on dos Suzie boys again….

          • nogofer

You win. Don’t ever come to North Dakota. I win.

      • Blinky The Wonder Chimp

If I lived in North Dakota I’d travel around following the hockey team to get out of that godforsaken state too!

I’m sorry but you must be jealous of all the money surplus our state has…Oh how is your state doing? i hope you don’t live in gopher land where there so broke even the government bodies are out of work LOL w/e  i hunt, fish, and go to school

          • nogofer

AG:  I, and I’m certain you concur, would much rather have car trouble in North Dakota than North Minneapolis. I have lived and travelled in both and the failure that is mn is evident.

In ND “Hi!” is a greeting, in mn “Hi!” means ‘are you?’

As a HUGE Sioux fan living in the cities – Even I have to say that it is about time that Minnesota has there own tournament.  It clearly will be a huge draw for all hockey fans and a big money maker for St. Paul.

  • BulldogFan

I hope the Bulldogs have nothing to do with this tourney.  The Bulldogs and Gophers should play every year in a non conference series either home and home or one year at Duluth the next at Minnesota.  Let MSU, BSU and SCSU play in the tourney with the Gophers. The Bulldog/Gopher rivalry needs to be played out in a series every year.  The Bulldogs are going to be playing SCSU 4 times every year in the National.  I have seasons tickets to the Bulldogs and really don’t consider MSU/UMD or UMD/BSU much of a rivalry.  I think the majority of Bulldog fans fell this way.  Not trying to be rude towards BSU and MSU just honest.

    • Hockey Fan

I’m a season ticket holder as well to the Bulldogs, and I will disagree with you. Besides the Gophers, the place ALWAYS has empty seats. I personally look forward to Bemidji coming cause they travel well. Wait till Miami and Western bring their 6 fans.

      • BulldogFan

The attendance was higher when Huntsville came to town than when BSU was at Amsoil earlier this fall.  If you watched the UMD/Western game on TV/Internet you would see those games were a lot more fun to watch then UMD/BSU series.

        • Hockey Fan

Perhaps they were, but that can change next time. Plus attendance is as much timing in this fair weather fan city. Keep telling yourself that it 2 years when the Bulldogs fall back to earth and are an average team, playing in front of about 4,800 (hopefully) people against a “like minded Institute” of Western or Miami. You’ll then enjoy the non-conference game against BSU more than you will admit.

As a Bulldog season ticket holder myself..[10+ years] You’re the reason UMD alway has empty seats, because you CAN NOT enjoy a great hockey team, you are waiting for them to “return to earth” I bought season tickets to UMD when they were AWFUL!!! But I wanted to support the local team and watch great college D1 hockey. If I wanted a winner, I would have save $400 a year and watched UWS across the bridge. They were the best team in town back then.

Since moving to Minnesota, that’s one thing I never understood, you support your team..When they win! Maybe when the Vikes are in So Cal, it might hit home…maybe!? Hey Minnesotans, you want to keep your team..spend some of that money..cheap cheap cheap!!

    • WCHAFAN

This is stupid…   Point is, it would be a Minnesota Cup for all the MN teams.  That includes UMD…  One championship and now your extra special?  Come back down to this planet and let the rivarlies begin…   The bean pot probably started out in the same fashion and now it’s huge…

Just a fun fact…  BSU and UMD have met every year since BSU joined Div I hockey…   OVer the last 15 games, BSU is 8-6-1 against your super extra special dogs.

      • BulldogFan

I never said anything about UMD being extra special.  I sense some bitterness towards UMD. And wow, I can cherry pick the BSU/UMD series numbers also, the Bulldogs are 18-9-1 all time against BSU and and 3-1-1 in the last four games. See how easy that is?  Also, what will you be saying when your watching BSU play Mankato in the Friday 1pm semi final game in the MN CUP,  at the “X”,  an arena that seats 18,0000, and there will be maybe 3,000 people there.  Wow, the atmosphere will be electric!  I think at best you would average at this tourney would be 12,000 fans each day which would give you a grand total of 24,000 fans for the weekend, divide that by 4 and that’s 6,000 tickets sold per team.  The Bulldogs and Huskies would each get more fans over the weekend if they both stayed at home and didn’t go to this tourney and instead hosted a home series against a NC opponent. In fact MSU and BSU probably would average more then that for a home series.  Neutral site games are for the post season not the middle of the season.

  • Jdhockeyboyz

Perfect.  I always liked the Beanpot concept.  A midseason non-conference tourney against familiar and geographically close opponents will be more fun for the fans and players than a 2 game non-conference series against an opponenet no one follows or cares about

  • MankatoFan

It needs to be all 5 teams in a round robin over 5 days…every year! These schools are hours from each other and fans would travel or stay in St. Paul. Use shoot outs and total goals to decide the championship game participants. December must have an open week. I hate the fact we have to bow down to the Gophers.

  • upnorth

4 team format with the Gophers as a lock???   The big ten is going to be the worst of the 3 hockey conferences represented going forward!  The playoff should be at AMSOIL and have a round robin format with all five schools, or forget it.

    • nationalchamps02

Amsoil instead of the Xcel Energy Center or Mariucci? Get a grip, Amsoil is half the size of Mariucci. That venue will never host a Minnesota tournament. Its  way to small. #gophernation

  • guest

Get all five 5 teams involved!  No team should ever be left out on the rotation unless all 5 teams are apart of the rotation!

  • WCHAFAN

This is a great idea and I cannot wait to go!  Not sure why UMN is so special that they get to be in every year…   All 5 teams should participate every year in order to truly represent their geographical area, conference, and earn the Minnesota Cup.
