Minnesota freshman Reilly done for year with knee injury

Minnesota announced Thursday that freshman forward Connor Reilly will miss the 2012-13 season with a knee injury.

Reilly suffered the injury after he slipped and fell awkwardly over the weekend, according to a school-issued news release. He is scheduled to undergo surgery in the near future, although a date has yet to be determined.

“I’m disappointed for Connor,” Minnesota coach Don Lucia said in a statement. “He’s been working very hard to get back on the ice this year from his previous surgery and this is an unfortunate setback for him. I’m confident that he’ll continue to work hard through this process and support the team in any way he can this season. We have a great medical staff here at the University of Minnesota and I know they will make sure Connor’s surgery and ensuing rehabilitation go well.”

Reilly, a native of Chanhassen, Minn., helped the British Columbia Hockey League’s Penticton Vees set a North American junior hockey record with a 42-game win streak en route to RBC Cup and Doyle Cup championships in 2011-12. He also finished seventh in the BCHL in scoring last season with 86 points.

What the USCHO staff failed to mention is that he did so at a team party. According to the startribune “Reilly TORE the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in an off-ice fall Saturday at a team party, according to two sources close to the situation.” I feel bad for the player, not the fans who just TORE into the UND population for the same type of situation. Lucia turns his head and looks the other way, Hakstol suspends the captains and takes the appropriate action.

      quite likely. but for all we know it happened before they even started drinking. and yeah kids drink (generally speaking) drink, but this kid might not. we don’t know. he wouldn’t be the first. or last. (but I’m not holding my breath.)

  Same type of situation? Outside of both happening at a team party and likely involvement of alcohol how are the situations the same? The UND players violated team rules, apparently seriously enough to warrant suspensions. Does anyone have information on what exactly they did that broke team rules?
  I don’t see how a player getting hurt at a party requires the same response by the athletic department in this case. If you want players suspended for this, shouldn’t UND have suspended their captains after Kristo’s frostbite incident? I don’t, and I doubt you do either. There’s more to both stories, but to call for suspensions and rip Lucia in this case is ridiculous in my opinion. Especially given the fact that Hakstol took no action, the AD did.

  The vaunted UND one game suspension that happens every year because they always open with a team that they can beat blind-folded. When Hakstol actually suspends someone for a game that matters, start getting holier than though for us.

  You are not a bright person (I wanted to phrase this differently but the moderators would have got me) and you give UND fans everywhere a bad name…thanks for the help.
  This is a freak accident and a terrible situation for a bright young player. Yes, he was partying but so what. He could have taken a fall down the stairs or something and the same thing could have happened. I am a UND fan but I never like to hear of a young talented player having a major injury.

The fact is, the Gophers had a team party and it was made public, UND had a team party and half of the team got suspended. But, I am sure the goof balls were drinking cool~aid and not Beer.   Hastol did not suspend the players the AD did you idiot!!!!! This is what gives the rest of UND Fans a bad name.
  The difference is UND fans have nothing else to talk about. Without hockey there your school is just a low level division one program that nobody cares about.
  Let’s see what happens to UND when Minnesota and Wisconsin leave for the the Big 10… Without Minnesota UND is going to lose alot in terms of exposure on TV and in money.
  Remember Minnesota is recruited heavily by UND and the split may affect them on TV and money.

If you were a scout and did not recruit out of state you would be fired! Absolutely nothing is going to happen to UND’s program as the Big 10 begins to fail. It’s all fun and games till somebody gets hurt. They have off season workouts for hockey, maybe they should have offseason workouts for partying. Start with wine coolers and work up to beer.

Wow I love Gopher fans. There motto “Gopher players and fans never do wrong, ever, ever, ever” They were partying like UND was and didn’t get caught, but instead just had a player get hurt. Yea the Captains should get suspended for one game that matters, just like any other team that has a team party and gets caught either by the cops or something like this.
