North Dakota party leads to ‘unlawful delivery to certain persons’ charges

Five North Dakota players – captains Andrew MacWilliam, Danny Kristo, Carter Rowney and Corban Knight and senior Joe Gleason – were charged in Grand Forks District Court Monday with “unlawful delivery to certain persons” for providing alcohol at a team party last September, a Class A misdemeanor, according to a report Tuesday in the Grand Forks Herald.

MacWilliam, Kristo, Rowney and Knight were suspended for the first game of the season for the party. Three other players were suspended for the incident, but were not charged.

The five players charged have a pretrial conference scheduled for March 7.

“When we announced our disciplinary measures in September, we did so acknowledging that those measures would not preclude possible actions taken by the local and/or state authorities,” UND athletic director Brian Faison said in the story. “We are aware of the ongoing legal process and will allow that process to play out.”

Every year it seems UND players get into hot water, get a slap on the wrist, and go back to playing. Kids breaking such rules that can cause so much worse damage because of drinking and driving and violence, need to be off the team. Plain and simple

Every year. Right. Hey Mr. Superlative, I bet you think every (meaning all) other hockey player on every (meaning all) other hockey team has never had an alcoholic beverage before the age of 21. UND is the only team in the country where the players have made mistakes. By your definition every fraternity and sorority needs to be closed, every dorm room should be shuttered, and the university shut down.

  He didn’t say they should shut down anything. He simply stated a fact: that North Dakota hockey players are in the news literally every season for underage or excessive drinking issues. For the past 5 years it is true. It appears the university needs to re-assess their values. Giving a 1 game suspension against a pre-season non-conference foe isn’t really much punishment. If they want to stop this behavior and the poor reflection of their University every year, they need to stiffen the penalties.

      People with attitudes like yours are the reason almost 11,000 people died needlessly in drunk driving accidents last year and why 1 out of every 3 people in this country will be involved in an alcohol related traffic accident in their lifetimes.

        I love UND hockey. I wish it was a cleaner organization and that the school’s integrity was held to a higher level. Get rid of players who do such things and show the world that education is above athletics, and the university would, prima facie, have a better reputation.

        waste any more time on arcticman. Wonder how he’ll deny these
        “generalizations and superlatives”? BTW, I don’t see the one where
        Finley was cited for being drunk, sitting in a lawn chair and throwing
        empty beer bottles in the street. Or is that the 2009 “disorderly
        conduct” with Frattin? Either way, only the most naive of UND rubes
        would sweep all of this under the rug and deny that UND hockey has an
        image problem.

        I stole this from a DU hockey blog. I didn’t know that DU has a rivalry with UND, but is seems so. I also don’t remember this many incidents, and so many per year…reminds me of Maine hockey in the old days. They absolutely need to clean up their act there.

        Stolen from the DU blog. Over half of these are either acquitted or charges not filed however guilty until proven innocent is the prevalent theme here so I cannot argue with attacks against our constitution. You and your hatred win.

        The cumulative events over several years at UND have included DUI charges. The comments are not article specific, but include all incidents over a multi-year period.

  On paper this does seem to be a problem, but as a college student who has visited many schools with D1 programs (UND, UMN, UMD) it BLOWS my mind that the people commenting think this is only a problem at UND. While seeing these hockey parties first hand there is absolutely no difference between what happens at UND and other programs near by. In fact I saw UMN captains walking the streets of dinky town incoherent over winter break. Fact of the matter is UND is a much smaller campus in which you cannot get away with as much as say Minneapolis where there are much bigger fish to fry. So before you go bashing these kids and the program id look into seeing things first hand like i have, and not turn to bashing 20 year old kids for having a drink in a dorm, god knows NONE of you drank at the age of 20…..

    No bashing here. Any school that records so many issues over a short period of time deserves scrutiny. The point is, any player who does such things should be removed for a period of time that allows then counseling, sobriety (if there is an alcohol problem), and any other help they might need. It is for the benefit of all students and the reputation of the school. If you see undue condemnation here, you aren’t looking at things with great visual acuity.
