College Hockey:
North Dakota, St. Lawrence each have two on list of 10 finalists for 2013 Hobey Baker Award

The top 10 candidates for the 2013 Hobey Baker Memorial Award were announced Thursday night, with North Dakota and St. Lawrence each placing two players on the list.

The 10 finalists were selected by voting from all 59 Division I head coaches and by online fan balloting at www.hobeybakeraward.com.

Next, the 23-member selection committee and an additional round of fan balloting (at www.hobeybakeraward.com) through March 31 will determine this year’s Hobey Baker winner.

The Hobey Hat Trick will be announced Wednesday, April 3 and the winner will be announced Friday, April 12 in Pittsburgh during Frozen Four weekend.

Minnesota-Duluth forward Jack Connolly won the award in 2012.

funny goof. i hope you mean 48 points instead of 48 goals for knight.
    go sioux

ha. yeah. that would make him a shoe-in.

no haula? what a terrible snub

  • jdhockeyboyz

Am I in a parallel universe? Erik Haula – 49 points in 35 games – Hobey no show. Austin Czarnik – 36 points in 35 games – Hobey finalist. Are you kidding?

    • Satriani92

I was surprised by Czarnik being included in the final 10. Not surprised by Haula being excluded.

    • Mike

Czarnik is a two way guy that excels on the backcheck. They may have finally looked at defense!?

      Thought the same thing.

COACHES have made the DECISION for Hobey finalist based on playing the game not by partial fans who have favorites or jealousies over a player not picked

  • stod_2

The three best players that I have seen play this year, not in any order are:

    Eric Hartzell
    Johnny Gaudreau
    Corban Knight

That would be the three that I expect to see at the award ceremony but you never know. LeBlanc has had a great season as well.

  • nogofer

Somehow my screen name is prophetic?

    • Satriani92

Not prophetic at all. The sad truth are that the two Gophers that had a shot at the outset were saddled with inconsistent seasons. Partly by play, partly by design. The Gophers relied on a big first line last year to drive them to the Frozen Four. This year that line was broken up and the scoring of Bjugstad and Rau dropped off considerably. The up side is that the Gophers have three lines that can score now, as opposed to one huge line. Time will tell if that was the right move or not, but their record has been hard to argue with. Additionally, I believe that Hobey candidates should stand above the crowd and elevate the play of those they play with and provide leadership and even be able to take their teams on their back if needed. While Bjugstad did that last year, he did not this year and frankly even if he had the points, I don’t see him as that type of player, nor is Haula. The Hobey should not be given out based on scoring or numbers alone. In all honesty the only player that the Gophers have that would fall into that category this year would be Wilcox and it is rare for a freshman to be considered for the hobey. Also it is for the same reason as stated above that I think Knight is a great candidate and Kristo is not.

      • Mike

well stated Satriani, well stated. I too agree with your assessment about Haula and Bjugstad, neither of them elevated themselves to true Hobey status. Just scoring points should not get you the Hobey (unless you score Karyia type points!) I myself believe Knight could very well end up in the Hobey hat trick, it’s between him, LeBlanc, and Carey for the third spot. I think Hartzel and Gaudreau will be shoe ins…IMO. And “nogofer”….seriously…why not use this time to congratulate your NoDak players rather than hurl immature insults at Gopher players? You can use whatever colorful and overused comeback you want, but I really mean it…take the time to congratulate the UND players and the commitment and effort they put forward to get to hobey nomination status.

        • nogofer

Satriani92 and MikeE are educated gofer fans I can respect. There are throngs that I do not and those so-called fans on this board know who they are. Before someone adds in “No one cares” let me just add that
          I don’t care…

What was the final of the game tonight?? I didn’t get a chance to watch it…

What was the final of the game Friday night? I didn’t get a chance to watch it…

        • MNGopherGuru

I am pretty sure a D3 women’s team could have beat us last night! We will see ya in the regionals, hopefully at the frozen four!!

          • nogofer

We got the same regional so both umtc and UND in the FF is out. It would have been great to see us play each other in the FF…

    • mahogma

UND with 2 supposed Hobey candidates cannot make it to the conference semis? Epic fail.

      • GophersSuck

Who did the gophers lose to tonight? I wasn’t able to watch…

Go Saints! Congratulations Paul and Greg! Good luck.
