Western Michigan’s DeKeyser finally makes decision, chooses Red Wings

After announcing he was leaving school to pursue an NHL free-agent deal, Western Michigan junior defenseman Dan DeKeyser chose the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.

DeKeyser, a two-time CCHA best defensive defenseman award winner, leaves the Broncos after 118 total games where he recorded 12 goals and 49 points with a plus-23 plus-minus rating.

This past season, DeKeyser, a Michigan native, finished with 15 points on two goals and 13 assists

He was fun to watch these past three seasons and was a big part of helping turn the program at WMU around. I hope he has a long and productive NHL career.

Hopefully WMU recruits enough talent to replace the early departures. NHL-ready players are a reflection of the great work being done by Murray & staff.

I have a lot of respect for him choosing to return to school a third year. I can only imagine he wants to stay close to home, too. Congratulations, and good luck!

This one hurts me a little. First I lost Greg Jennings from the Packers, as he was my favorite, and now I lose Danny from WMU. It just won’t be the same watching at Lawson without 5 and 28 together on D. Best of luck though.
