College Hockey:
Report: Berard, Cavanaugh, Gwozdecky finalists for Connecticut head coach gig

According to the Hartford Courant, Connecticut is expected to announce the hiring of a new men’s coach early next week and has whittled down its candidates to three individuals.

More than 40 people applied for the job, the report read, and the three finalists are interim coach David Berard, Boston College assistant Mike Cavanaugh and former Denver coach George Gwozdecky, who was on campus Thursday for his interview.

An offer could be made Friday, the article added.

As a Hockey East fan patiently waiting for UConn’s arrival in men’s Hockey East and seeing the new hire for the UConn women’s team, it looks like UConn is starting to take hockey seriously.

Perhaps one day, they can challenge for the top spot in the Connecticut hockey hierarchy. UConn should talk with Quinnipiac, Yale and Sacred Heart about a permanent in-season tournament for the Connecticut schools.

I hope they hire George Gwozdecky and make themselves a top-flight program. Not taking anything away from David Berard or Mike Cavanaugh, who would be excellent choices, just giving my opinion about what might drive additional appearances on NBCSN.

Maine should have hired Gwoz already, but it appears they have dropped the ball again by waiting so long. They already lost Montgomery. My guess is Gwoz will be named the new UConn coach this week and Maine will be stuck with the leftovers. I guess that’s what you get when you have a politician as your AD.

UConn would be wise to hire Berard… he is an up & coming leader who has earned his opportunity to lead the Huskies. Gwoz is on the “back 9″ and he’s had his run… Berard will lead this program to new heights and he knows what it takes to win…

Gwoz is a perfect fit for UConn. He coached the Pioneer while they were building a new arena. He is a great recruiter, excellent coach and has developed excellent assistant coaches who are now D-1 head coaches. Plus, he selects good kids and is responsive to alums. This is a no brainer for UConn.
