Massachusetts-Lowell starts season No. 1 in D-I men’s poll; defending national champ Yale sixth

Six teams received first-place votes in the preseason USCHO.com Division I Men’s Poll conducted on Monday, but with 19 first-place votes and 844 total points, Massachusetts-Lowell starts the year in the top spot.

Boston College finished fourth in the poll.

North Dakota, Notre Dame and St. Cloud State took up spots seven through nine, respectively.

There was a tie for 11th place as Michigan and Minnesota State each wound up with 417 points.

New Hampshire landed at No. 13, Providence 14th, Rensselaer 15th, Union at No. 16, Denver at No. 17, Western Michigan at No. 18, Boston University 19th and Niagara at No. 20.

In addition, 19 other schools received votes in the poll.

Is it just me, or is it unusual that the defending champs end up so low on the next season’s initial rankings?

I think it’s just you. Being ranked 6th is low? It’s certainly quite a bit higher than they were ranked going into the NCAA tournament last season (15th, and the last team in). Yale got hot at the exact right time and overachieved themselves into the championship.

The idea of the preseason poll is to gauge people’s impressions of the hockey landscape for the coming season, not rehashing the results of last season. Players graduate, new recruits come in, coaches leave and new ones replace them. Things are different from how they were 6 months ago. I can’t say that I *expect* Yale to do better this coming season than any of the 5 teams ranked ahead of them.

I appreciate the enthusiasm of the poll voters, but it’s hard to imagine what Yale will look given that their starting goalie(s) will be a freshman(men). 6th seems really high when you don’t know about goal

UML was picked to win HEA again this year, which I wasn’t shocked by. But coming out as the best overall team to start the season? That surprised me! Not that I don’t think they’re good….just you always expect to see a BC or something up there at the top.

Puck drops in a little over a week!

BU picked by the Hockey East coaches to be 6th in the league, but is picked 19th overall.

BC picked by the Hockey East coaches to tie for league with UMass-Lowell but gets no first place votes.

Curious but that is the nature of the first poll of the year.
