North Dakota’s Mattson gets NCAA Elite 89 award

PHILADELPHIA — North Dakota’s Nick Mattson on Wednesday was named the winner of the NCAA’s Elite 89 award for academic and athletic achievement.

The award honors a player who has the highest academic standing among those who reach the championship level in their sport.

Mattson, a junior entrepreneurship major, has a 3.966 cumulative grade point average.

He is tied for the North Dakota scoring lead among defensemen with 23 points in 39 games.

The award is presented to a student-athlete at the finals site of each of the 89 NCAA championships.

    That is a really impressive GPA, for any major.. then on top of that considering what a full-time job college athletics are. And he’s a major contributor on the ice too? #brightfuture

      The players bust their hump on the ice and in the classroom. Not an easy accomplishment for any student athlete

        my college roommate played baseball for the Gophers, and was an engineering major, so I definitely have utmost respect for student athletes. It is insane when you consider practice, weight room, team meetings, and then traveling or playing every weekend. Just to complete the degree, let alone be a top performer in both arenas, is impressive. So I hope my comment didn’t appear snarky, because it was not, in any way. true respect for this award to Mattson.
