Virginia Men's Tennis Begins ACC Championship As Top Seed

Sophomore Lee Singer has a 6-6 record in singles matches this season for the Cavaliers. Singer and Ted Angelinos have a 20-3 record on the season, good for a No. 53 national ranking. Virginia opens the ACC Championship against N.C. State, which it defeated April 11 at Snyder Tennis Center.

    U. Florida (Oct. 20) — When 128 people are gunning for the same prize, 127 people go home unsatisfied. The Florida men’s tennis team was part of the 127. But there was a boatload of silver linings for a team that squared off against the nation’s elite. After three days’ worth of matches at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Lexington, Ky., the Gators ended their run Saturday when Tyler Hochwalt dropped a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5 decision to No. 12 Nate Schnugg of Georgia in the Round of 16.

  • M. Tennis: N.C. State Enduring Heavy Tournament Schedule

    N.C. State (Oct. 19) — Members of the N.C. State men's tennis team competed in the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Championship in Chapel Hill over the weekend. The tournament, which began Thursday, continues throughout the week and will conclude Oct. 20. The ITA is an indoor tournament and is considered home away from home for the Wolfpack, according to coach Jon Choboy.

  • M. Tennis: Top Spot Within Reach For Nebraska Players

    U. Nebraska (Oct. 17) — This weekend is the next to last fall tournament for the Nebraska men's tennis team. While last week's All-American tourney featured some of the best talent in the country, this time it's all about the ITA Central Region Tournament in Fayetteville, Ark. NU Coach Kerry McDermott said the Cornhuskers will be one of the top teams at the tournament along with Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Wichita State and Drake.

  • M. Tennis: Arizona Heads To Malibu In ITA West Regional

    U. Arizona (Oct. 16) — The Arizona men's tennis team is set to take the courts in Malibu, Calif., this weekend for the ITA West Regional Championships. While any opportunity to play against someone in colors other than cardinal and navy before the spring season starts is something that players and coaches covet, UA assistant coach Tom Lloyd said the Wildcats must focus during the tournament, which runs today through Sunday.

    U. Alabama (Oct. 15) — Alabama tennis coach Billy Pate had only one word to describe John Lewis, his most experienced freshman. “Regimented,” Pate said. “He’s all about routine … he wants things a certain way.” It’s a blueprint for success in any athletic field, but one especially important in tennis, where an enormous serve is easily offset by inconsistent form. His attention to detail and work ethic are intangibles no coach can teach, but all coaches love.
