As conference battles intensify across the country, teams from the NESCAC and ECAC East take the ice for the first time this season. Columnist Tim Costello has a preview of all 20 teams. In the ECAC West, writer Scott Biggar chronicles the growing pains in Neumann while SUNYAC scribe Russell Jaslow analyzes the new found league parity and hypothesizes how that affects erstwhile powers Oswego and Plattsburgh. In the NCHA and MCHA, veteran columnist Matthew Webb examines the usual proliferation of the former teams in the top 15 and how close the race for second place (behind stalwart Adrian) will be in the latter. And finally Scott Bridges takes a look at upcoming Thanksgiving tournaments involving MIAC teams.

Back to the Future

St. Norbert remains atop D-III.
St. Norbert remains atop D-III.

Continuing a pattern they repeated nearly every week two seasons ago, the St. Norbert Green Knights have topped the latest USCHO.com Division III poll for the second consecutive installment. Not much was different throughout the rankings, in fact, as the top five teams remained unchanged and no new squads broke into the top 15. Notable movers included Elmira, buoyed by two big victories, flying four spots up to No. 11 and the Neumann Knights plummeting seven spots to No. 13 after losses to the Soaring Eagles and new-No. 14 Hobart.

    The Humanitarian

The Hockey Humanitarian Award enters its 14th season this year, and nominations are open for the award that honors "college hockey's finest citizen." The Hockey Humanitarian Award recognizes hard work, good will, perseverance and character — players who represent the best our sport has to offer. Perhaps 2008 honoree Will Bruce said it best: the spirit of service honored by the Hockey Humanitarian Award is "not just solving a problem, it's letting people know they matter." Nominations for the 2009 award — which are welcome from coaches, college officials and all those who know a deserving candidate — are open through Dec. 19.
