The jubilant Norwich Cadets celebrate their third national championship and first in seven seasons.

In arguably the greatest Division III championship of all-time, the top ranked Norwich Cadets outlasted the St. Norbert Green Knights, 2-1, in double overtime. The classic tilt, and the hockey season, ended with just 31 seconds left in the second extra session when freshman forward Pier Oliver-Cotnoir knocked in his own rebound, winning the longest game in D-III history with an historic tally. Green Knights netminder B.J. O'Brien stopped 70 shots in a losing — but valiant — effort and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Four of the top five teams in the country met in the semifinals in Lake Placid on Friday. In the end, very little — two goals — separated them. In the thriling early game, No. 3 St. Norbert upset No. 2 Oswego, 4-3, when Cody Keefer scored the deciding tally with 39 seconds left in the game, less than two minutes after Oswego had tied it. St. Norbert will face No. 1 Norwich, who edged No. 5 Plattsburgh, 3-2. Steve Coon notched the game-winning goal for Norwich at 8:09 of the third and the Cadets withstood a furious rally from the Cardinals. St. Norbert will faceoff against Norwich at 5 p.m. EST on Saturday.

    The Humanitarian

The Hockey Humanitarian Award enters its 14th season this year, and nominations are open for the award that honors "college hockey's finest citizen." The Hockey Humanitarian Award recognizes hard work, good will, perseverance and character — players who represent the best our sport has to offer. Perhaps 2008 honoree Will Bruce said it best: the spirit of service honored by the Hockey Humanitarian Award is "not just solving a problem, it's letting people know they matter." Nominations for the 2009 award — which are welcome from coaches, college officials and all those who know a deserving candidate — are open through Dec. 19.
