College Hockey:
Hockey East Picks: Feb. 17-18

Call me the comeback kid, the UMass-Lowell of picks, whatever. There are three weeks left in the regular season and, for the first time all year, I’m back in first place!

Dave last week: 3-6-1
Jim last week: 7-2-1
Dave’s record-to-date: 97-64-14
Jim’s record-to-date: 98-63-14

Friday, February 16

Merrimack at Boston College
Jim’s pick: So many difficult games to pick this weekend, and this starts them. I think BC is hot enough coming off the Beanpot win that it will carry through to Friday.
BC 4, MC 3
Dave’s pick: I’ve been picking BC all season long and paid the price during its midseason swoon.  Now that the Eagles have won five straight and in impressive fashion, I’m not going to start picking against them now.
BC 4, MC 2

Massachusetts at Maine
Jim’s pick: UMass has given Maine fits late in seasons before, but I think this Maine team is too hot right now
Maine 4, UMass 2
Dave’s pick: The Minutemen finally got off the road schneid last week at BU, but that still leaves them at 1-9-2 away from the Mullins Center. Alfond Arena isn’t the place to make it two in a row.
Maine 5, UMass 2

Boston University at Massachusetts-Lowell
Jim’s pick: Last weekend’s home loss for Lowell was the exception, not the rule. Picking the River Hawks once again at the Tsongas.
UML 4, BU 3
Dave’s pick: Lowell has earned the best home record in the league (10-2-0), but I can’t shake the feeling that its Cinderella season is about to toll midnight.
BU 3, UML 2 (OT)

Vermont at New Hampshire
Jim’s pick: These are two teams heading in opposite directions. Easy pick, in my opinion.
UNH 4, UVM 1
Dave’s pick: I have to agree 100 percent.
UNH 4, UVM 1

Providence at Northeastern
Jim’s pick: I feel like I should be picking Providence here, hands down, but I think Northeastern has something to prove after another dismal Beanpot.
NU 4, PC 3
Dave’s pick: The Huskies do have something to prove, but I don’t think they’re going to do it.
PC 4, NU 3

Saturday, February 18

Providence at Northeastern
Jim’s pick: The Friars will bounce back Saturday at home. [Dave here: Jim originally listed this game at Providence, but since it's at Northeastern I'm giving him until Friday at 7 to switch this pick. ]
PC 5, NU 2
Dave’s pick: I’m going against the odds here and picking the Friars to sweep on the road.
PC 3, NU 2

Massachusetts at Maine
Jim’s pick: The Black Bears will finish off this sweep at home to keep the race atop Hockey East as tight as possible.
Maine 5, UMass 2
Dave’s pick: Could the Black Bears stun everyone and finish in first place?
Maine 4, UMass 2

Massachusetts-Lowell at Boston University
Jim’s pick: This feels like a split and I’ll go the home team route.
BU 3, UML 2
Dave’s pick: BU’s four losses in its last six games do concern me, but I still think this is a Terrier sweep.
BU 3, UML 2

Boston College at Merrimack
Jim’s pick: I really feel like I should be picking Merrimack here, particularly how much BC has struggled at Lawler in recent years. But I just have a gut feeling about BC this weekend.
BC 4, MC 3
Dave’s pick: Like Jim, I’m sticking with BC.
BC 3, MC 2 (OT)

Vermont at New Hampshire
Jim’s pick: Second night will be closer, but UNH is just the better team right now.
UNH 3, UVM 2
Dave’s pick: I don’t see either game in this series being close.
UNH 4, UVM 1

Whover wins the UML/BU series basically gets the #1 ranking

UML/BU split and BC goes undefeated for the rest of the HE schedule. Game, set, match.

Nothing will be set in stone until the completion of the Hockey East tournament. Too many possible games against TUC, against each other or where one falls to a low-seed can change the possibilities/seedings.

At least one will be an NCAA Number One seed. It is possible for two.

Remembering a couple years ago when UNH drew the 1 seed in the playoffs and UVM was the 8 and they came to durham and dropped the first game then shut UNH out in the next two.  UVM always plays UNH tough and already played to a draw at the Gut.  don’t count them out or take them for granted.

If the Black Bears finish in first place, I’ll change my name to MUD.

You’re safe this year and the next two years.  Unfortunately….

      Number 8 in the PairWise.

Settle down. Get in the NCAA. They just as likely to win the four NCAA games as about 10 other teams in D-I

With how much Merrimack has struggled of late, I’d be surprised if the games are as close as Dave and Jim are predicting.  Hopefully they get things going in the right direction this weekend.

With this weekend’s series and the series against UML and 2 against UMass left, I could easily see the Warriors losing at least 4, and perhaps 5 of those games, and if they want any shot at home ice, and to try to secure a spot in the PWR for the NCAAs, they had better get the ship righted and get moving in the right direction.

uml is not going to sweeped dave!

What a terrific finish … if ML and Merrimac go down again tonight – what an ideal match-up they will have next weekend. Bringing more certainty that the Boston(s) will be one, two – with Maine as a sleeper. The latter has becoming a team that no one may want to play in the tournament if they can maintain some poise. All that said, Northestern, Providence and NH will still have something to say …

Jerry has the boys peaking at just the right time.  Hockey east is the dominant conference so far this season and I hope that 5 teams can make the big show.  North Dakota not making the cut would be a Bonus!
    Go EAGLES!!!
