Helanen Throws Second Shutout Of Season
AMHERST, Mass. — UMass-Amherst senior goaltender Markus Helanen made 28 saves en route to his second shutout of the season defeating No. 3 New Hampshire, 3-0, Saturday night at the Mullins Center.
Senior Jeff Turner scored a power play goal at 14:18 of the first period with assists from Samuli Jalkanen and Tim Turner to give the Minutemen a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second period, Martin Miljko recieved a cross ice pass from Jay Shaw and Darcy King to extend UMass’ lead at 7:38 of the third period.
Tim Turner recieved a pass from Helanen and skated the length of the ice to score his sixth goal of the season and give UMass a 3-0 lead with 9:11 remaining in the game.
The win improves the Minutemen to 3-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in Hockey East, while New Hampshire falls to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Hockey East. The shutout marks the first time in 67 all-time meetings that UMass has shut out UNH.
The Minutemen return to action next weekend, Nov. 10 and 11, when they travel to the University of Nebraska-Omaha for a weekend series. The Wildcats travel to Providence on Friday and host Providence on Saturday.
