APPLETON, Wis. — Wisconsin-Stout put the puck in the net more times when they were shorthanded than when they were at full strength, as the Blue Devils opened their season with a 5-1 win at Lawrence.
Stout recorded three shorthanded goals and had two at even strength.
Aaron Decker scored for the Blue Devils only 52 seconds into the game.
With three minutes left in the first period, Stout’s Dan Winkler scored his team’s first shorthanded goal.
Stout scored three times in the second period, with a shorthanded, unassisted goal by Drew Nichols four minutes into the period. Two minutes later, Joe Berry notched a shorthanded goal.
Blue Devil Nate Legler made it 4-1 with three minutes remaining in the second.
Lawrence’s Mike Burkhart scored the Vikings’ lone goal at 6:29 of the third.
Stout outshot the Vikings, 46-26. The Blue Devils (1-0-0) wrap up their series with Lawrence (0-1-0) Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m. CT.
