Shutout Of Saints Gives Denver Fast Start To Season

DAYTON, Ohio (Oct. 4, 2003) — Junior Jeff Drummond scored one goal and added an assist, and senior Adam Berkhoel made 24 saves to lead the No. 13 Denver Pioneers to a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence in the championship game at the Lefty McFadden Invitational.

Junior Kevin Ulanski added two assists. Drummond, named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, was joined on the all-tournament team by Berkhoel, Ulanski and junior Luke Fulghum.

Drummond started the scoring for Denver by converting a St. Lawrence turnover at 17:02 of the first period. The shot surprised Saints goaltender Kevin Ackley and staked Denver to a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Brett Skinner earned his first point of the season on the play with an assist. The Pioneers dominated play in the opening period by outshooting the Saints, 19-8.

The Pioneers were outskated by St. Lawrence in the second period, but escaped with a 2-0 lead. Junior Matt Laatsch scored his first career goal at 19:37 on a beautiful feed from Ulanski. Drummond also earned his first assist of the season on the play.



Denver outshot St. Lawrence, 9-8, but Ackley kept the score close for the Saints by making eight saves.

Fulghum closed out the scoring for Denver with his second goal of the season at 12:51 of the third period.

With the win, Denver improved to 2-0 on the season, while St. Lawrence falls to 1-1.--
