College Hockey:
BC Sweeps UMass

— Freshman Benn Ferriero registered two goals and senior Chris Collins tallied three assists to lead Boston College to a 4-1 win and a weekend series sweep of Massachusetts in front of 6,372 fans in the Mullins Center.

BC defeated UMass 7-0 on Friday night in the first meeting between the teams this season.

Four of the game’s five goals were scored in the first period of play. Ferriero added his second goal of the game – an empty-net tally – in the third period for the 4-1 final.

Collins and Ferriero connected with junior Brian Boyle just 54 seconds into the game to put the visiting Eagles up 1-0.

UMass (5-10-0, 3-7-0 Hockey East) evened the score at 6:15 with a power-play tally from freshman Chris Davis, before BC responded quickly on Ferriero’s shorthanded score at 7:17.

Sophomore Dan Bertram scored the Eagles’ third goal of the period in a four-on-four situation, beating UMass freshman goalie Jon Quick (35 saves) to end the scoring.

BC (8-4-1, 7-2-1 HE) outshot the Minutemen 39-14, including margins of 12-4 in the second period and 15-4 in the third period.

Sophomore goalie Cory Schneider made 14 saves to earn his ninth victory of the season.
