Balisy, Western Michigan rally for tie with No. 3 St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Western Michigan’s Chase Balisy scored a pair of tying goals, the second with 3:22 remaining to force a 5-5 tie with No. 3 St. Cloud State on Friday.

Justin Kovacs gave the Broncos the extra point in the shootout with a first-round goal that stood up as the only score.

Jimmy Murray scored twice for the Huskies, who built a 4-1 lead in the second period.

But Mike Cichy, Shane Berschbach and Balisy scored for Western Michigan (11-8-4, 5-5-1-1 NCHC) before the end of the period for a 4-4 tie.

After Nic Dowd gave the Huskies (12-3-4, 7-1-3-0) the lead again in the third period, Balisy forced the tie.

St. Cloud State was 3-for-5 on the power play; Western Michigan was 2-for-4.

The Broncos’ Frank Slubowski allowed three goals on four shots in the game’s opening 14:34. Backup Lukas Hafner stopped 16 of 18 shots and all three in the shootout.

Ryan Faragher made 22 saves for the Huskies.
