The biggest upset of the weekend belonged to St. Scholastica. In a showdown with top-ranked St. Norbert, the Saints recorded a win for the ages, stunning the Green Knights, 4-3. The win is their second over a No. 1 team in program history.
Parker Mismash helped pave the way, scoring twice for the first multi-goal game of his career. Leading 4-1, the Saints held off a furious third-period rally by St. Norbert to nail down the statement victory. St. Scholastica had not beaten St. Norbert in Duluth since 2010.
The unbeaten streak now stands at 11 games for the Saints, who have won 10 games during the impressive streak. The Saints are now 13-5 overall and 7-4-1 in the NCHA.
Forbes Ploszaj nailed down the win between the pipes, stopping 27 shots.
Cole Golka and Kyle Star both tallied a goal and an assist, while David Ross dished out two assists. It’s the third consecutive game in which Ross has come up with at least one point.
High five for the Spartans
Aurora turned in one of its best performances of the year Saturday, scoring a season-best six goals in a 6-3 win over Marian. The win is the Spartans’ fifth of the year, the most in a season in program history.
Brendan Logan fueled the offense with a pair of goals, while Liam Stirtzinger came through with a goal and an assist. Rihards Marenis stepped up in a big way as well, dishing out three assists.
Road warriors
Fourth-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point went on the road Friday night and knocked off Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 5-2, in WIAC action. The Pointers got a huge boost from Willem Nong-Lambert, who scored twice to pace the Pointers to their second consecutive win. Wis.-Stevens Point improved to 7-1 on the road.
Max Milosek got the job done in goal, racking up 29 saves. The Pointers, who rallied for a 3-2 win over Wisconsin-River Falls Saturday, improved to 14-4-2 this season. They are 3-0-1 in the conference.
Auggies and Gusties split
Gustavus Adolphus and Augsburg split their weekend MIAC series. The Gusties opened the weekend with a 4-1 win over the No. 14 Auggies before Augsburg bounced back Saturday with a 3-2 win.
Chris Amsden came up big for Gustavus, racking up a season-high 35 saves. He won his sixth game and is 6-4-1 on the season.
J.P. Ekyn led the way for the Gusties, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist.
Brett Bukowski scored the game-winner in the third period. Alex Rodriguez came through with his fifth goal of the year in the win, and Chandler Madry also scored for the Auggies, who held a 34-30 advantage in shots.
Augsburg has won four of its last five and ended the weekend in a three-way tie for first place with Gustavus and Saint John’s. All three teams have 21 points.
Johnnies turn heads with offensive performance
A school-record 60 shots. Nine goals. That was the kind of night it was for Saint John’s in its 9-1 win over Concordia Friday.
The Johnnies scored four goals in a span of six minutes in the first period and never looked back. They scored three goals on the power play. Thirteen different players tallied a point for the Johnnies, including Mitch Fritz, who came through with two goals.
Andrew Lindgren came up big in goal, stopping 33 shots. He is now 7-2-1 on the year and leads the MIAC in goals-against average at 1.68. He also leads the conference in save percentage (.935) and winning percentage (.750).
The nine goals scored by the Johnnies are the most in the 10 years Doug Schueller has been the coach of the Johnnies.
The Cobbers did bounce back Saturday night in a 4-2 victory. Bryan Kronberger scored twice and Jacob Stephan made 42 saves for the Cobbers, who won their eighth game of the season.
Tommies sweep Royals
St. Thomas capped off its weekend with a 6-2 win over Bethel Saturday night. The win is the third in a row for the Tommies, who won their 10th game of the season and are still very much alive in the MIAC title hunt as they sit just five points out of first place.
Brett Gravelle came through with two goals and an assist to pace the Tommies. Benjamin Myers made 21 saves.
St. Thomas opened the weekend with a 4-0 win over the Tommies. Myers made 19 saves for his sixth career shutout. It’s the third shutout of the season for the Tommies as a team.
Cullen Willox scored twice to pace the offense. Gravelle and Jack Christensen also scored goals in the win.
