Smith launches four-goal third period to lift Massachusetts-Lowell past Quinnipiac

LOWELL, Mass. — C.J. Smith scored and added two assists as No. 9 Massachusetts-Lowell beat No. 13 Quinnipiac 6-3 on Friday.

Six River Hawks players scored goals, and Kevin Boyle stopped 24 of 27 shots.

Lowell (2-0) broke open a 2-1 game after two periods with four goals in the third, with Smith starting it on a power play.

Robert Francis, Joe Gambardella and Michael Colantone also scored for the River Hawks in the final 20 minutes.

Sam Anas, Justin Agosta and Andrew Taverner scored for the Bobcats (1-1), who got 20 saves from Michael Garteig.
