Cornell wins on Kubiak’s overtime goal, ending Providence’s unbeaten string at 19

ESTERO, Fla. — Jeff Kubiak scored his fourth goal of the season 2:56 into overtime Monday as No. 9 Cornell handed No. 1 Providence its first loss of the season, 2-1 in the semifinals of the Florida College Hockey Classic.

Cornell (9-1-2) will play Ohio State, which upset No. 4 Boston College, for the tournament’s championship on Tuesday.

Before Monday, Providence (12-1-3) last lost on March 15, an overtime defeat to New Hampshire in Game 3 of a Hockey East quarterfinal series. The Friars then won four games to win the national championship and went unbeaten through the first 15 games of this season.

Steven McParland scored 27 seconds into the game for Providence, but Cornell’s Mitch Gillam shut down the Friars from there, finishing with 31 saves.

Jared Fiegl scored a second-period goal for the Big Red.
