Gilkerson’s Hat Trick For Augsburg Can’t Stop Superior’s Win

Dottie Gilkerson made her collegiate debut an impressive one with a hat trick, but it wasn’t enough for Augsburg, as the Auggies dropped a 5-4 non-conference decision to Wisconsin-Superior on Friday night at Wessman Arena.

The game was the season-opener for both teams.

After scoring the first goal, on a Gilkerson power-play tally six minutes into the game, the Auggies allowed four straight Yellowjacket goals, two in a two-minute span by Brei Thompson, to take a 4-1 lead in the second period. Katie Cheese had the other Auggie goal in the contest.

The game was a physical one, as the two teams combined for 10 penalties for 20 minutes. Augsburg had an apparent game-tying goal in the third period disallowed, and could not edge closer in the contest.

Laura McGowan had two assists for the Auggies. Jodi Winters made 24 saves in a losing effort in goal. Augsburg outshot the Yellowjackets by a 36-29 margin.
