Mercyhurst Sweeps Canisius, 6-2

Mercyhurst defeated Canisius, 6-2, in the second half of the Punch Imlach College Hockey Showcase at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo on Saturday night. Western Michigan had defeated Niagara, 4-3, in overtime in the first half of the Showcase.

The Lakers (5-1-1, 5-0-1 MAAC) opened the scoring at the 2:31 mark of the first period on the power play with a Jody Robinson goal.

Cansius knotted the game at 1-1 just 23 seconds later when Ice Griff David Deeves scored.

The Ice Griffs then took the lead at the 13:16 mark on a Jason Spence goal.

Mercyhurst opened the floodgates in the second period scoring five times to open up a 6-2 lead.

Louis Goulet scored on the power play at 2:04. That was followed by an Adam Tackaberry goal at 8:54 and a Brad Olsen goal at 13:32. Then Tom McMonagle’s goal at the 15:21 mark drove Sean Weaver from the nets.

McMonagle added another goal with 1:17 left in the second period off of Stephan Fabilli.

Canisius will travel to AIC next Friday for a pair and Mercyhurst will not get back into action until it travels to Connecticut on Thanksgiving Eve.
