Newell, Benik lead St. Cloud State’s rout of Western Michigan

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Patrick Newell scored twice, and Joey Benik posted five points in No. 5 St. Cloud State’s 8-2 victory over Western Michigan on Friday.

It was the second straight game this season in which the Huskies (19-5-1, 11-3-1 NCHC) routed the Broncos (7-13-3, 4-8-1). St. Cloud State won 11-1 in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Nov. 14.

The Huskies opened up a 5-0 lead after two periods.

Charlie Lindgren made 34 saves for St. Cloud State. Lukas Hafner stopped seven of 11 shots before being replaced by Trevor Gorsuch, who made 16 saves.
