WCHA roundup: Michigan Tech earns a tie with No. 11 Michigan

WCHA results

Michigan Tech 3, No. 11 Michigan 3 (OT)

The Huskies overcame a 2-1 third period deficit with goals by Chris Leibinger and Thomas Beretta less than two minutes apart to take the lead on Michigan. But a Cutler Martin goal with 4:10 remaining knotted the game for the Wolverines and forced overtime.

Despite a heavy shot advantage of 45-18, including a 5-0 margin in OT, the Huskies couldn’t find the game winner. Jack LaFontaine was the hero making 42 saves to help Michigan improve to 3-1-1.

Special teams were key for Tech, which scored a power play goal and killed all three Michigan man advantage opportunities. The Huskies are now 1-5-2 on the young season.

Northern Michigan 2, Ferris State 2 (OT)

Northern Michigan twice overcame single-goal deficits to force overtime and battle to an official 2-2 draw. Robbie Payne tallied the game-tying goal with 7:26 remaining in regulation. Neither team scored in the 5-on-5 or 3-on-3 overtime periods. Ferris State earned the extra WCHA league point with a shootout win.

No. 19 Ohio State 6, Bowling Green 1

The Buckeyes got goals from four different scorers to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the game’s first 25 minutes en route to a 6-1 victory. Pierre-Luc Mercier notched his first goal of the season for the Falcons.

Lake Superior 5, at Alabama-Huntsville 2

After Max McHugh got the Chargers on the board just a minute into the game, the Lakers battled back with four straight goals in route to a 5-2 victory. Anthony Nellis scored twice for Lake Superior and Gordon Defiel made 18 stops in net to pace the victory. McHugh added his second of the game in the third period but it wasn’t enough for Alabama-Huntsville.

No. 1 North Dakota 5, No. 18 Bemidji State 4

North Dakota erased an early Beavers lead on a goal by Leo Fitzgerald with five straight goals that included Brock Boeser’s fifth and sixth goals of the season. Bemidji State stormed back with three third period goals but it was not enough to avoid the series sweep. Michael Bitzer made 28 saves for the Beavers in the loss.

No. 9 Minnesota State at Alaska (late)
