Yates’s three points lead Cornell over Canisius

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Big Red returned to action at home with a victory over in-state rival Canisius. Fifth-ranked Cornell (11-2-0 overall) broke a 1-1 tie with three consecutive second-period goals, including two from Kyle Betts as he completed a hat trick at Lynah Rink.

Trevor Yates finished with two goals and an assist for the Big Red. Jeff Malott and Alex Rauter supplied three assists apiece for Cornell, which also got 24 saves from Hayden Stewart. Dylan McLaughlin collected a goal and an assist for the Golden Griffins (10-6-1), who got 24 stops from starter Daniel Urbani and 13 saves from third-period replacement Blake Weyrick.

Cornell went 0-for-3 on the power play, despite outshooting its opponent, 41-26 overall, while 20th-ranked Canisius finished 1-for-3 with the man advantage thanks to a goal by Nick Hutchison.
