Johnson out, Matthews in for Amherst women

Tracy Johnson has resigned as the interim head coach of the Amherst women’s team and Jeff Matthews was named this week to the same role with Lord Jeffs.

Matthews spent the last six seasons as the head coach of the Northwood School boys’ junior team in Lake Placid, N.Y., amassing a 174-59-17 overall record.

“It has been my career ambition to coach at an institution like Amherst College,” said Matthews in a statement. “I was immediately drawn to the type of student-athlete that attends Amherst and their balanced approach towards life, academics and hockey. To be part of such an exceptional athletics staff and community is a thrilling opportunity for my family and me.”

Prior to Northwood, Matthews spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Rensselaer, his alma mater, and has also been an assistant at American International.
