Senior Nights Pt. 1

Regular seasons ending means senior night ceremonies. I am super sentimental at these games, even when I’ve rarely covered the home teams which was not the case last weekend. On Friday afternoon, I covered the Providence College Friars at Boston College. The Friars have five seniors – Sarah Bryant, Courtney Kukowski, Allie Morse, Lexi Romanchuk and Brittney Thunstrom – who were acknowledged by the BC PA and in a nice move skated over to shake hands with the BC seniors following their ceremony.

The Eagles have six seniors – Lexi Bender, Alex Carpenter, Meghan Grieves, Kaliya Johnson, Haley Skarupa and Dana Trivigno – and they were honored with family members prior to the game and with their numbers on the boards in front of their bench. This photographer admits to being slightly obsessed with catching players by their numbers. It’s a bit easier these days than when the Eagles had their numbers painted on the ice instead of board advertising.

On Saturday, it was senior night for the Harvard men playing Colgate. The Raiders have five seniors Mike Borkowski, Kevin Lough, Darcy Murphy, Tylor Spink and Tyson Spink. They will be honored this Saturday as Colgate hosts its final game at Starr Rink.

The Crimson honored their seven seniors – Desmond Bergin, Colin Blackwell, Kyle Criscuolo, Greg Gozzo, Brayden Jaw, Peter Traber and Jimmy Vesey – following the game. To make it extra sweet, the game-winning goal was scored by senior co-captain Criscuolo with three minutes remaining in the third.

There will be plenty of senior nights this weekend. I hope all college hockey fans will try to make a local game and get to their seats prior to the game start if a ceremony is held first or stay a few extra minutes if it is held after. The senior classes across NCAA hockey have put in plenty of hard work for four years on AND off the ice and should feel recognized by the fans.
