Alaska head coaching position down to interim coach West, former Miami assistant Brekke

The final two finalists have been selected for the head coaching position for Alaska and will participate in on-campus interviews starting this week.

The finalists include former Miami assistant coach Brent Brekke and Alaska interim head coach Lance West.

West was named interim coach last summer after previous head coach Dallas Ferguson left the school for a position with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen. He led the Nanooks to a 11-22-3 overall record (9-17-2 WCHA).

“We had a strong pool of applicants but we feel confident that these two individuals will represent the Alaska Hockey program to the best of their abilities going forward,” Nanooks interim athletics director Kayne Gutierrez said in a statement.

While on their on-campus visit, the finalists will meet with various administration, staff and faculty within the Fairbanks campus and its athletics department. Prior to the meeting with the team, the Nanooks will be hosting a public forum that is open to the general public.

Brekke’s public forum will take place Tuesday, Apr. 10, at noon AKT. The meet and greet will take place in the Nanook Lounge within the Patty Center on the Fairbanks campus.

More details on West’s forum will be made available on Tuesday.
