ECAC Northeast/MASCAC wrap: Jan. 8

Suddenly, the new year seems to be catching up with Curry.
After amassing a seven-game winning streak that stretched through the bulk of November and December, the Colonels have lost four straight — all nonconference games, including three on the road — and hope to use the final two games of this week’s road trip through New York to regain some momentum in preparation for the heart of their ECAC Northeast schedule.
A 6-5 overtime loss to Hamilton on New Year’s Eve ended Curry’s seven-game winning streak, the start of its current four-game slide. In those four games (including losses at Connecticut College, Hobart and Utica), Hobart held the Colonels (7-5) to three shots on goal in the third period, and against Utica, the Colonels gave up four second-period goals.
Curry plays three more nonconference games this week — Tuesday at Manhattanville, Friday at Oswego, and then January 17 against Manhattanville — then resumes its ECAC Northeast schedule January 21 against Wentworth.
ECAC Northeast teams will have one more week of nonconference play (save for Wentworth and Becker, which play a conference game Friday), while the MASCAC resumes its conference schedule Thursday with three games.
Tournament games
Four teams from the ECAC Northeast and MASCAC played in tournaments this past weekend: Becker defeated Worcester State, 4-3, for the Worcester City Shootout on Saturday, as Andrew Bates scored the game-winning goal 24 seconds into overtime.
Fitchburg State meanwhile, lost 5-1 to Norwich in the championship game of the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament at Norwich.
Norwich, which entered the weekend as the No. 1 team in the country (and most likely will remain there once the Division III polls are released this afternoon), outshot Fitchburg State 40-17, and Travis Bertolotti scored the lone goal for the Falcons at 12:57 of the first.
Johnson and Wales defeated Southern New Hampshire, 7-0, in the consolation game of the Codfish Bowl at Massachusetts-Boston.
