NHL’s Capitals sign Lake Superior State freshman Bindulis to three-year contract

The Washington Capitals announced Tuesday the signing of Lake Superior State freshman defenseman Kristofers Bindulis to a three-year entry-level contract beginning in 2017-18.

Bindulis will forgo three seasons of NCAA eligibility in signing the professional contract with the Capitals and will report immediately to the American Hockey League affiliate of the Capitals, the Hersey Bears, on an amateur tryout agreement.

“Our staff and the Laker hockey program would like to congratulate Kris on reaching his lifelong goal of signing an NHL contract,” said LSSU coach Damon Whitten in a statement. “We’re thrilled to continue to track his professional career and wish him the best in his future pursuits.”

In 28 games as a rookie with the Lakers in the 2016-17 season, Bindulis scored one power-play goal and registered 11 assists for 12 points to rank third among LSSU defensemen in scoring.
