Top Hockey East Honors Split

Balance was the operative word at this year’s Hockey East banquet. Ben Eaves and Mike Ayers were named co-winners of the KOHO Player of the Year Award while Massachusetts coach Don “Toot” Cahoon earned CCM/Bob Kullen Coach of the Year honors. Eight of the nine schools placed representatives on the All-Hockey East teams while the ninth made it a clean sweep with a berth on the All-Rookie Team.

Maine players took three major awards. Goaltender Jim Howard earned Rookie of the Year honors, Cliff Loya was named the Old Time Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman, and Martin Kariya garnered the Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship Award.

Boston University’s Mark Mullen was selected as the Best Defensive Forward while Merrimack goaltender Joe Exter, critically injured in last Friday night’s playoff contest, joined Eaves as co-winner of the ITECH “Three Stars” Award. Boston College goaltender Matti Kaltiainen nosed out Ayers as the ITECH Goaltending Champion with a 2.20 goals against average.
