Lucia agrees to contract extension at Minnesota

Minnesota has agreed to terms on a contract extension with head coach Don Lucia through the 2014-2015 season.

“Don is a championship caliber coach and is deserving of this extension,” said Minnesota director of athletics Joel Maturi in a news release. “He has led the University of Minnesota to two national titles and recently battled through a significant illness. He is now totally healthy and fully committed to Minnesota.

“I believe Gopher hockey to be the premier program in the country and Don is the right man to continue to lead our student-athletes.”

Lucia, in his 13th season behind the bench, won back-to-back national championships with Minnesota in 2002 and 2003 and has a stellar 294-159-53 record with the Gophers. Minnesota is off to a 4-0-0 start this season, its best start since 2001-2002.

“Our goal every year is for Minnesota to be a championship team and we have been able to achieve the ultimate success twice since I have been here,” added Lucia. “Some years we come closer to reaching our goals than others, but I am confident that we are headed in the right direction.”

  1. Shoot, you guys probably will do a little better now that you won’t have the Sioux in your division anymore. As Steve Miller would put it “Go on take the money and run”.

  2. TYPICAL SUE FANS.  HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO BUT TROLL WEB SIGHTS FOR GOPHER HOCKEY ARTICLES.  EVEN WHEN THE GOPHERS ARE DOWN THEY STILL RECEIVE MORE COVERAGE THAN THE SUE.  THAT IS FUNNY!!!

    • You are the one that trolls around SIOUX web sights.  You comment on every article multiples times wishing you had tradition like the FIGHTING SIOUX.  SOunds like you need a job.  You probably live off of the system like the rest of Minnesota.  Thanks for ruining college hockey by going to the Big Ten.  Since that move college hockey has been torn apart.  Rivalries are gone.  Maybe now you can get out of the gutter and make it to the post season.  Have fun playing Penn State and the other worthess teams.

  3. typical Goofers fans.  You been watching your team the past five years?  Compare that to the Sioux in terms of NCAA tournaments and attendance and passion

    • Yep. I was right. Minnesota and North Dakota have the same number of national championships over the last 5 years. At least Mariucci isn’t strewn with racist graffiti.

  4. You Sue fans still don’t get it! The BigTen league HAD to form under constitution of the BigTen…whenever six BigTen schools compete in a varsity sport, they HAVE to be in the BigTen conference. I’m so sick of seeing that “Oh you Gophers ruined college hockey!” That’s asinine! Penn State was the deciding factor that forced BTH…and that’s why that league HAD to form, because they were the sixth team. I don’t like that it happened, either, but it’s the way it HAS to be. Then you and Denver tried to stick it to the man by forming your own “super league” and then had to settle by adding St. Cloud and Western Mich cuz Notre Dame wanted to play in a Hockey East all along. All said and done, I hope this new transition goes fine and college hockey is still strong, but please stop blaming Wisco, MN etc because under the fine print of the BigTen, they didn’t have a choice. To think these new leagues will bring big tv $$$ is ridiculous. BigTen Network is football and basketball driven. Basketball and football fans could give two shinsplints about hockey.
