ECAC West Weekly Picks, Nov. 11-12

My picks for last week started out bad, missing both games on Friday night.  But I was perfect on Saturday and Sunday to earn a respectable weekend performance.
This week’s games are even harder to pick, as three of the games are within the league and could easily go either way.  Time to flip a coin.
Last Week:  4-2
Overall:  4-2 (.667)
{predicted winners bolded}
Friday, November 11
Neumann at Hobart – No one works harder than the Statesmen, but Neumann is chomping at the bit to get into league play.
Westfield State at Utica – The Pioneers should be able to roll over Westfield State in front of a very friendly crowd.
Saturday, November 12
Utica at Hobart – Unfortunately for the Statesmen, Utica follows up on Saturday to ruin the weekend for Hobart.
Neumann at Elmira – “It is a huge game,” said Elmira coach Aaron Saul.  “Neumann is the best team in our league on paper.  They have everybody coming back.  It is our first home ice for a league game, and we’re excited.”  Elmira should get a surge out of its home opener.

  1. What I learned is perhaps UML kids were believing the hype. They were not nearly as good as their #5 ranking had them, not currently as good as their #7 ranking, and I’m beginning to question their heart. By my account, they played UML hockey for no more than about 20 mins total last weekend and disappeard for long stretches of both games. Looked like PC simply wanted it more. Norm’s got some work to do.

    • Before you count the River Hawks out, let’s see how they play this coming weekend vs. NU & BU. Northeastern looked really good Friday night rolling four solid lines. This past weekend NU looked better than their record indicates. BU is starting to look like the powerhouse the preseason polls predicted. If UML wants to make a statement, this coming weekend is a great opportunity to do so. Lets see what happens.

      • I haven’t counted them out, just looked at it with a bit more skepticism until proven wrong. The # of penalties they took, and the uncharacteristic lack of sustained puck pursuit have me concerned. Maybe it was the long layoff, who knows, but like you said, we’ll see. If they do come out with the same compete level as last weekend they won’t beat NU, let alone BU or BC.

        • There was a time not long ago that UML was really tough to beat if they played with the lead. I see they were up two goals on Friday night, but lost the game.

          • They won at UNH 2-1 where they had a 2-0 lead after 10 minutes dominating the Wildcats. It looked like UML was playing a HS team. Then they sort of played ‘not to lose’ even though they almost blew it. UNH was the better team for the last 2 periods. Lowell needs a killer instinct, less penalties and a better PP. Just my opinion

    • Naturally I was thrilled with the weekend sweep but UML impressed me. Always a tough time when these two meet; I liked Wall and UML’s PK. Can’t argue with Norm’s success. Seems like the pundits are coming around to seeing that the Friars are underrated, good to be back in the rankings. Best to Lowell the rest of the way especially vs BU/BC!

    • I believe that I told you that last week, but you believed in those phony stats against weak teams. I have been to a bunch of games and have yet to be impressed. They seem to play good early and then fade in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Lacking any snipers, maybe with a great rink, the most fans and 5 straight NCAA bids Norm can actually recruit top talent and not just the hard nose scrappers. They need finishers. Very frustrating seeing 2 goal leads disappear almost every week.
