SUNYAC picks: Jan. 27

Game of the Week
Outside of the obvious — points are points — there is no game that sticks out as a key game in the standings. So, I’ll go with the Pink the Rink game between Morrisville and Potsdam.
The Mustangs have participated in this game before, and their coach Brian Grady is looking forward to it again.
The event has become such a happening, the hockey is almost second nature. Somehow, it seems the players don’t mind.
Nonetheless, there is a hockey game to be played. Fredonia swept through last weekend, boosting them into a third place tie with Buffalo State, which will also get to play Morrisville on Saturday. Thus, neither one can afford to give away points to the Mustangs.
Morrisville makes no secret what its role is now since they cannot compete in the playoffs this year.
“We’re playing spoiler right now,” Morrisville coach Brian Grady said. “We understand that.”
Spoiler or not, I’m taking Fredonia to take the win. Ditto with Buffalo State.
Other picks
Last week, I did a modest 7-3 for a season total of 73-22-11 (.741).
The North Country rivals hook up in Plattsburgh on Friday.
“We’re going to have our hands full next week with an unbelievable Plattsburgh team,” Potsdam coach Chris Bernard said. “I think they are the best team in hockey here in the second semester. We have to make sure our execution matches our effort. It’s the only simple thing we have to do.”
Potsdam is too inconsistent and Plattsburgh is playing too well to pick anyone other than the Cardinals.
Brockport hosts Cortland and then Oswego. The Golden Eagles have an opportunity to move into a playoff spot this weekend. I’ll take Brockport in the first game, Oswego in the second.
Geneseo hosts the same two teams. The Ice Knights desperately need a win, if for nothing else, simply to gain some self-confidence. They will get it on Saturday against Cortland, but not Friday versus Oswego.
