TAMPA, Fla. — It’s fairly common practice for hockey players to quit shaving once they get to the playoffs. Ferris State players began growing theirs when they clinched the regular season CCHA title. They had nearly two weeks to let their whiskers bloom before playing Bowling Green in the second round of the league playoffs — and we all know how that went.
So, after losing in overtime to the Falcons on March 11, Bulldogs players picked up their razors. Clean shaves, clean starts. Two weeks later and some players remain shorn while senior Jordie Johnston looks as though he’s just come in from the wilderness. Johnston explains why.

One of the more baby-faced Bulldogs is Johnston’s classmate, goaltender Taylor Nelson, who jokes about his relative inability to nurture a substantial playoff beard.
“I don’t have one, at all,” said Nelson. “Jordie Johnston has the best playoff beard. He actually shaved this morning. No, I’m just kidding.
“He does look like a lumberjack, like the Brawny paper towel guy. And that’s his style, too. He wears those suspenders and plaid. Oh, he loves that. He’s really embracing the playoff beard.”
