If you hear about new helmets that Boston College is wearing …

TAMPA, Fla. — An email came through Thursday morning saying that Boston College players would be wearing a new kind of helmet in the national semifinal game against Minnesota, one that’s designed to “manage the multiple type of hits in the game.”

Concerns about player safety in respect to concussions seems to be at an all-time high, so any kind of advancement in helmet technology is bound to be welcomed.

But the timing seemed curious. Why would Boston College players be changing helmets right when the Frozen Four starts? This is the time of the year when you usually go with what got you here.

It turns out that it’s not such a new development. According to Boston College media relations contact Tim Clark, there are seven players in Thursday’s lineup who are wearing the new style of helmet, and they’ve been doing so since around the Beanpot tournament in early February.
