NCHC picks: Oct. 21

On Friday, I thought I might run away with the picks contest early, but Matthew rebounded with his picks Saturday. We both went a dismal 5-6-2 (.461). On the year, I am 13-10-4 (.555) while Matthew is 11-12-4 (.481).

Let’s see if we can get any better.

Friday

Colorado College at No. 10 Boston College
Candace: BC has struggled mightily, but I think home ice helps. Boston College 3-2
Matthew: I’d love to see CC defend the realm, but I don’t know if it’ll happen. Boston College 4-2

Friday-Saturday

No. 6 Denver at Michigan State
Candace: I’m not sure what to make of the Pioneers, but they looked really good last weekend, so we’ll run with it. Denver 3-2, 3-1
Matthew: MSU was swept in its season-opening series at Lake Superior State, but while I think they start to turn it around here, Denver ought to get something out of this series. Denver 3-1, Michigan State 3-2

Maine at Miami
Candace: Maine looked very good last weekend at home against Quinnipiac. Miami struggled to score against Ohio State. I think this is a split. I’m agonizing over this one. Miami 3-2, Maine 3-1
Matthew: Maine has won three of its first four games of the season, but I like the RedHawks to keep climbing here. This may be going out on a limb, but I’ll take a sweep. Miami 3-1, 2-1

No. 14 St. Cloud State vs No. 7 Minnesota (home-and-home)
Candace: St. Cloud looked dreadful against Minnesota State, but I think the home teams win both. Minnesota 3-2, St. Cloud State 3-2
Matthew: Minnesota has been scoring for fun early on this season, and it’s tough to see the Gophers getting nothing from this series. Home teams win. Minnesota 5-2, St. Cloud State 4-3

No. 18 Bemidji State at No. 1 North Dakota
Candace: Bemidji has upset North Dakota in the past, but I like the Hawks to keep rolling. North Dakota 3-2, 3-1
Matthew: UND’s schedule gets harder this week, and Bemidji’s a perfect 4-0 at the moment. I really would not be surprised to see the Beavers split here. Bemidji State 3-2, North Dakota 4-1

Vermont at No. 20 Omaha
Candace: Sorry RedArmy, this one’s a sweep for the home team. Omaha 3-2, 3-1
Matthew: I like UNO to build on what it was able to accomplish in Alaska last weekend in tournament play. Omaha 3-2, 4-2

Saturday

Colorado College at New Hampshire
Candace: CC has had a really hard time with defense. The only games the Tigers have been in (and, in one case, won) were like NHL shootouts of the 80s. I think New Hampshire turned a corner with the win over Clarkson, so I’ll go with the home team. New Hampshire 3-1
Matthew: This is a much more winnable game with UNH struggling out of the gate. I think the Wildcats eke this one out, though. New Hampshire 3-2
