Weekend picks: Nov. 18

I picked up a game on Nicole last week, after a few weekends where she’d cut my lead. I went 21-5-5, while Nicole went 20-6-5. On the year, I am 123-41-23, while Nicole is 118-46-23. Some interesting contests to pick this weekend, so let’s get to it!

Friday, Nov. 17

Cornell at Brown
Candace: Brown got its first win of the year last week, but I don’t see the Bears beating the Big Red. Cornell 3-1
Nicole: The Big Red should bounce back with a win here. Cornell 4-1

Quinnipiac at Clarkson
Candace: I may just pick Clarkson in every ECAC game this season. Clarkson 4-
Nicole: I don’t think Quinnipiac has what it takes to upset Clarkson this year. Clarkson 3-0

Princeton at St. Lawrence
Candace: St. Lawrence should win this, unless the Saints are drained after the BC series. St. Lawrence 3-1
Nicole: I’ll take St. Lawrence at home. St. Lawrence 3-1

Colgate at Yale
Candace: Yale has been too inconsistent for me to pick the upset. Colgate 4-1
Nicole: Colgate should win this. Colgate 4-0

Friday/Saturday, Nov. 17-18

Syracuse vs. RIT (home-and-home)
Candace: Neither team has exactly lit the world on fire so far. I’m going out on a limb and picking Syracuse to sweep. Syracuse 2-1, 3-2
Nicole: I think RIT has what it takes to get the sweep. RIT 3-1, 2-0

Connecticut vs Boston College (home-and-home)
Candace: UConn tied the Eagles last time out, but I expect a sweep. Boston College 4-2, 4-2
Nicole: I expect the Huskies to push them, but BC gets the sweep. Boston College 4-2, 5-3

Providence vs Merrimack (home-and-home)
Candace: Providence hasn’t quite been as consistent as I think it could be, but I’ll take a Friars sweep. Providence 3-2, 3-2
Nicole: I’ll take a split, with each team winning at home. Merrimack 2- 1, Providence 3-2,

Holy Cross vs Harvard (home-and-home)
Candace: I’d love to pick the Crusaders to win one, but they didn’t look good against Sacred Heart. Harvard 4-1, 4-1
Nicole: Thus far the Crimson are showing that last season was an aberration, but the new norm. I expect they sweep. Harvard 3-0, 2-0

Boston University at Vermont
Candace: The Terriers should start winning at some point, but for now there’s no percentage in picking them. Vermont 2-1, 2-1
Nicole: Vermont is at home and needs the points, so I think they get hyped and earn a sweep. Vermont 2-1, 3-0

Ohio State at Bemidji State
Candace: I could completely see Bemidji getting an upset in one game, but for now I’ll go with the Buckeyes. Ohio State 4-2, 3-2
Nicole: If Ohio State wants to stay in the national conversation, they have to win series like these. Bemidji won’t go down easy, but the Buckeyes sweep. Ohio State 3-2, 3-1

Minnesota State at Minnesota Duluth
Candace: Duluth has been inconsistent, but the Bulldogs are at home. Minnesota Duluth 3-2, 3-2
Nicole: Duluth should be able to sweep this at home, though I like what I’ve been seeing from Mankato. Bulldogs take this. Minnesota Duluth 2-0, 3-1

St. Cloud State at Minnesota
Candace: Minnesota should do well against anybody not named Wisconsin or OSU in the conference. Minnesota 4-1, 4-1
Nicole: Gophers sweep. Minnesota 4-0, 5-2

Saturday, Nov. 18

Colgate at Brown
Candace: The Raiders stay hot. Colgate 4-1
Nicole: Colgate wins. Colgate 4-1

Princeton at Clarkson
Candace: Again, not picking against the Golden Knights any time soon. Clarkson 4-1
Nicole: Clarkson wins again at home. Clarkson 3-1

Quinnipiac at St. Lawrence
Candace: It will be a tight game, but expect the Saints to prevail. St. Lawrence 3-2
Nicole: St. Lawrence should be able to take this one. St. Lawrence 2-1

Cornell at Yale
Candace: I expect Cornell to stay in the upper tier of the ECAC this season. Cornell 3-1
Nicole: Cornell wins. Cornell 4-1

Saturday/Sunday, Nov. 18-19

Maine at Northeastern
Candace: This is probably the hardest series to pick this weekend. Maine hasn’t been as good away from Orono. I’m going on a limb and picking Northeastern to sweep. Northeastern 3-2, 3-2
Nicole: The Black Bears are motivated and have beaten Northeastern when they were playing better. I’m going to give Maine the nod and pick them to sweep. Maine 3-1, 3-2

New Hampshire at Rensselaer
Candace: I expected more out of UNH against Colgate, but the Wildcats should take this. New Hampshire 3-1, 3-2
Nicole: New Hampshire should sweep this. New Hampshire 3-1, 2-0

Tuesday, Nov. 21

Penn State at Cornell
Candace: Penn State has good defense, but not enough offense. Cornell 3-2
Nicole: Cornell continues their winning ways. Cornell 4-2

Wednesday, Nov. 22

New Hampshire at Providence
Candace: Watch this be a tie, but home ice gets the nod from me. Providence 3-2
Nicole: I’m going to take Providence at home here. They’ve got similar records, and I think the Friars can take it. Providence 2-1

Boston College at Harvard
Candace: More of a must-win for the visitor than the home team. Boston College 4-2
Nicole: BC wins big. Boston College 5-2

Bemidji State at St. Cloud State
Candace: The Beavers have shown themselves to be one of the more consistent WCHA teams so far. Bemidji State 3-1
Nicole: I like Bemidji here. Bemidji State 3-1

  1. Like you, I am highly prejudiced toward one team (RPI), I have followed them for the past 50 years. I also remember, Brian, when a substitute goaltender for the Engineers shut out BU, but that is truly ancient history.

    John

  2. Through 4 games McDavid had 1G, 3A. Eichel, 1G, 2A. The problem with the US team wasn’t Eichel, it was overall youth and inexperience. The US only returned 5 guys from last years team and had a team full of 96s and 97s.

    • Exactly. Team Canada is full of 95s, several of whom are on NHL rosters. There is a big difference with the extra 1-2 years of development (and pro experience) that the 95s have over talented competition 1-2 years younger.

I look forward to seeing how much better the young US D-men like Hanafin and Werenski will be in the next 1-2 years.

      • You hit the nail on the head. I wrote about the inconsistency of, and poor communication between our young D men after the Finland game. I was concerned then and it totally played out.

  3. Thanks for mentioning Lowell who has won 6 straight, outscored their opponents 34-19 since 11/15 and who currently have the 2cnd most wins and 2cnd highest winning % in the country.

    • I think Connelly’s relationship with the River Hawks makes him cautious about looking like a homer in his writing.

      2 weekends, 2 tournaments, 2 championships!

  4. I agree that there should be 2 regionals with 8 teams in each regional. They should stop trying to worry about “fan bases” attending the events. Having a large regional would bring in more general “hockey fans”. That’s who will fill the stands. These people will fly across the country to see hockey.
Also think it is junk that UofM is considered a host. If they don’t make the tourney, I guarantee they wont have the presence of a “host”.
Lastly, I assume the NCAA is licking their chops for AZ State to host a regional…
