Babson assistant, longtime Boston University assistant Bavis takes head coaching job with ECHL’s Nailers

The ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers have announced Mike Bavis as the team’s new head coach and director of hockey operations.

Last season, Bavis was an assistant coach at Babson.

Bavis began his coaching career in 1998, joining the staff of his alma mater, Boston University, and spent 15 years as an assistant coach and an associate coach with Jack Parker and the Terriers.

As a player, Bavis was a forward at BU from 1989 to 1993, tallying 34 goals and 82 points in 159 games.

After earning his degree in English, Bavis turned pro, playing two seasons in the Buffalo Sabres organization with the Rochester Americans and South Carolina Stingrays.

Wheeling had previously announced departed Merrimack coach Mark Dennehy as its head coach before Dennehy left to take the head coaching job with the AHL’s Binghamton Devils.
