Sad News

Last night during the second semifinal, the press was notified of the death of the mother-in-law of Maine coach Tim Whitehead. She passed away suddenly prior to the Black Bears’ loss to Michigan State. We were asked to respect the privacy of Coach Whitehead and his family and we are of course honoring that and publishing no further details. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Whitehead family.

  3. I hate ESPN, I don’t have ESPNU and they won’t let me watch it on WatchESPN. NBC sports network and NBC should take over the rights to air the tournament

    • The selections are silly based largely on past years performance. Wmu beat ferris twice Miami and Michigan yet they each have higher seeds. Must be winning doesn’t matter for seeding. What an old boys group

      • Not at ALL based on “last years performance.”  As you know, it IS based on the PWR formula based on games played THIS year. Winning against certain teams doesn’t guarantee anything. It’s all in the numbers for the SEASON.

        • Really wmu finished league play played with mich and ahead of Miami and then beats both teams in playoffs but Miami and Michigan get higher seeds based upon what?

          • Season results. Rewards teams that play well throughout the year, and not just those who might get hot at the end. Compare the schedules and results.

          • That is my point wmu tied for second in league play with michigan and finished ahead of Miami, then beat Miami and Michigan in league playoffs. Also played union at union and tied each game..not just hot at the end. Oh well let the fun begin

  5. 4 WCHA teams in, with the nations hottest team among them. When my Gophers join the big ten conference in two years, I will of course change my loyalty, bit it sure will be bittersweet.  Go Gophers, and if not them, someone from the WCHA!

  7. Just posted this on my FB: College hockey fans, how fun is this? Remember Blake Wheeler’s OT goal against North Dakota to win the Broadmoor trophy, only to see the Gophers heartbroken in the NCAAs by ND in Grand Forks in similar fashion? Well, here’s the Gophers’ chance to return the favor.  Honestly, ND looks better than anyone right now, so the odds are against the Gophs even on home ice (sort of), but they shouldn’t want it any other way.

    • Wrong! The Sioux will not score 6 unanswered goals if there is a rematch. The Gophers would win for two reasons:1. The gophers play poorly on fridays all year, the game would be on saturday night. 2. Therei s no way the Sioux score 5 goals in a period again.

  9. That was a joke, right, the Nation’s hottest team? Despite the usual “WCHA is the center of the hockey universe” mentality, 15 game win streaks do not just happen.

    • Point well taken, although history backs up the notion that the WCHA is the premier conference. Sounds like you don’t like to admit that, so just toss out an ad hom to make yourself feel bettter…fine by me. North Dakota is playing the best hockey right now.  No, it’s not 15 games in a row.  But actually watching the games, they are the cream, IMHO, today. I’ll amend my claim to say they are playing as well as anyone right now.  And I doubt any other team does to Minnesota what they did, then follows it up the next night by completely dominating DU. That said, they’ve been in this position before with Hakstol, and haven’t finished the deal…yet.

  11. Barry Melrose has a BC-Union final, with BC winning. Good enough for me!  So, all you CCHA and WCHA folks start whining about how the east is biased and your leagues are CLEARLY better than HE and the “EZAC”.
Barry might not be correct, but I’d say he knows A LOT more about college hockey than 99.9% of the people posting here.
    GO UNION DUTCHMEN!!!!!!

  12. I know how the PWR works.  I get it, but i believe there should be more subjectivity in the pairings.  WMU should be a 3-seed and Lowell a 4-seed.  That would create a whole slew of changes

    • More “subjectivity”? You mean YOUR subjectivity.  Isn’t that the whole point of the PWR, make it based solely on the numbers (for better or worse)? Why should WMU be a third and Lowell a fourth?

  14. I agree, which is why there is a committee.  This math-ONLY thing doesn’t work for the BCS and I’m suggesting more subjectivity.  The NCAAs is about who is hottest. I’m from NE, but I would suggest Lowell is not hot right now.  I mean they lost to a PC team that was out-scored the previous 2 weekends, by 19-3.  Western Michigan is as hot as it gets and their reward is to play another “hottest team in the country” – No Dak – in the first round?

I would do other tweaks, like Maine play Minne, not BU, so as to avoid a (potential) repeat of the HEA Final in round 2.  Is Ferris St really a 6-seed vs Duluth a 7-seed? With all due respect to Union, I know they won ECAC league and playoff, but they have more to prove than No Dak or BC does.  Union should get either Duluth or W.Mich as a potential round 2 matchup.

anyway, there’s probably more, but don’t want to get carried away

  16. St. Cloud vs. Denver is going to be an amazing series! Wish one of those games were on CBSSN rather than the blowout that UND vs. CC is going to be.
