Atlantic Hockey picks Oct. 19-20

Last Week: 9-6-2
On the Season: 9-7-3 (.553)

As usual, I picked a split correctly (American International and Penn State) but in the wrong order.

This week features of a host of games against ranked teams.

This Week’s Picks:

Friday, Oct. 19
No. 19 Colorado College at Air Force – The Tigers lead the all-time series 58-8-2 but the Falcons won last year at World Arena. I’m picking an upset again. Air Force 4, Colorado College 3.

Bentley at No. 5 Michigan – The Wolverines were recently reminded that an Atlantic Hockey team can win at Yost Arena, losing to Rochester Institute of Technology last Thursday.  Michigan 4, Bentley 3

Friday, Oct. 19 and Saturday, Oct. 20
Sacred Heart vs. Army – These are the only league games on the schedule, with the Black Knights hosting on Friday and the Pioneers on Saturday. I’m going with the home team in each game. Army 2, Sacred Heart 1; Sacred Heart 3, Army 2.

Mercyhurst at No. 16 Ferris State – The Bulldogs were upset last weekend at Rensselaer and can’t afford to take the Lakers lightly. FSU 3, Mercyhurst 1; FSU 3, Mercyhurst 2.

Niagara at Michigan State – This is the first meeting between the schools since 2002. The Spartans are coming off a miserable weekend at Minnesota where they were outscored 12-2 and will be fired up. Michigan State 4, Niagara 2; Michigan State 3, Niagara 2.

Canisius at No. 12 Western Michigan – Both teams are 1-1 going into this series, and Canisius is certainly capable of pulling off an upset. But I’m making the safe pick(s). Western Michigan 3, Canisius 2; Western Michigan 4, Canisius 2.

Saturday, Oct. 20
Holy Cross at Clarkson – The Golden Knights won 5-0 last season at Holy Cross, and I think they’ll win again, just not by that margin. Clarkson 3, Holy Cross 2.

Air Force at No. 7 Denver – The Pioneers lead the all-time series 31-3 and I think will add to that. Denver 4, Air Force 2.

Penn State at RIT – RIT’s homecoming game is another sellout: 10,556. I think the large crowd carries the Tigers to the win. RIT 4, Penn State 2.
