Women’s D-I picks: Jan. 16

Well, I got one more game than Arlan last week, thanks to Cornell. I went 16-7-2 to move to 192-67-29, while Arlan went 15-8-2 to move to 188-71-29.

Friday, Jan. 16

Colgate at Brown
Candace: Colgate won the last game between these two in OT. Will it repeat? Colgate 2-1
Arlan: Colgate seems to be the better defensive club of late, so we’ll go with that. Colgate 2-1

Rensselaer at St. Lawrence
Candace: The Engineers showed some life last week, but I expect the Saints to win. St. Lawrence 4-1
Arlan: RPI is starting to come on a bit, but so are the Saints and they start from a higher place. St. Lawrence 3-1

Cornell at Yale
Candace: The Bulldogs fell back to Earth last week. Cornell 5-1
Arlan: The Big Red are unbeaten in their last eight games, and I don’t think the Bulldogs are playing well enough to snap that string. Cornell 6-3

Friday-Saturday, Jan. 16-17

Syracuse at Mercyhurst
Candace: The last time out between these two teams, Syracuse got its first-ever win against the Lakers. Don’t see it happening again. Mercyhurst 3-2, 4-2
Arlan: The Lakers spent five weeks itching to get back on the ice. Mercyhurst 6-2, 3-1

RIT at Penn State
Candace: This is probably a split, but I have no handle on RIT right now, or a split order so I’ll pick Penn State. Penn State 2-1, 3-1
Arlan: I got burned reversing the order of an RIT series last week, so I’ll simplify this week, even though it looks like another split. Penn State 1-0, 2-1

North Dakota at Ohio State
Candace: See my comments on Penn State. Ohio State 2-1, 3-1
Arlan: I think this is a flat-out tossup, no matter how wobbly UND looks to the eye test. North Dakota 2-1, Ohio State 3-2

Bemidji State at Wisconsin
Candace: The Beavers play better teams well, but will fall short again. Wisconsin 4-1, 3-2
Arlan: The Beavers will try very hard, but the long January road and the Badgers will exact a toll. Wisconsin 3-1, 4-0

Saturday, Jan. 17

Rensselaer at Clarkson
Candace: The Engineers come up empty in the North Country. Clarkson 3-1
Arlan: Shea Tiley seems overdue for a shutout. Clarkson 3-0

Harvard at Dartmouth
Candace: I’m aware that in rivalry games, prior records often don’t matter, but the Crimson just look too good of late. Harvard 4-1
Arlan: Dartmouth would love an upset, but the Crimson look to be rolling too well to allow that. Harvard 5-2

Union at St. Lawrence
Candace: The Saints keep pace in the ECAC. St. Lawrence 4-1
Arlan: Union has struggled to score on home ice in 2015, and the offense is unlikely to materialize in the North Country. St. Lawrence 4-1

Colgate at Yale
Candace: This might be a very close game, depending on which Yale team shows up. Yale 2-1
Arlan: Big game for the Bulldogs as they move closer to locking down a playoff spot. Yale 2-0

Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 17-18

Boston College at Vermont
Candace: The Catamounts played the Eagles tough in November, but that’s pretty much been the highlight of their year. Boston College 5-1, 8-1
Arlan: Look for Vermont to pull a huge upset. Just don’t look for it this weekend. Boston College 4-0, 7-1

New Hampshire at Connecticut
Candace: The Wildcats seem to pull out wins when I least expect them to, but I’m going with a home team sweep. Connecticut 2-1, 3-1
Arlan: UNH is 2-13 over its last 15 games, scoring five times in each win and only 10 goals total in the 13 losses. Connecticut 4-1, 2-0

St. Cloud at Minnesota-Duluth
Candace: Though the Bulldogs showed a little vulnerability last week against Bemidji State, I don’t see St. Cloud taking advantage. Minnesota-Duluth 4-2, 3-2
Arlan: The Huskies won the series in Duluth last year, but I don’t sense a repeat is pending. Minnesota-Duluth 4-0, 3-1

Sunday, Jan. 18

Boston University at Northeastern
Candace: The Terriers rebound from the disaster against Cornell. Boston University 4-2
Arlan: I’m convinced that Northeastern will start to play better hockey at some point, but right now, dang. Boston University 6-4

Maine at Providence
Candace: I’ll pick Maine, just to have at least one game different than Arlan. Maine 3-2
Arlan: I have to pick some upsets, and this looks like as good a one as any. Providence 3-2

Quinnipiac at Boston University
Candace: If this was three weeks ago, I might have picked differently. Quinnipiac 2-1
Arlan: Both the Terriers and I have been a little off for much of the season. Quinnipiac 2-0
