ECAC Picks Dec. 16-18

Last time: 10-3-0

Overall: 27-8-3

While most teams are on break, Princeton and Union cap off their first half of the season this weekend. The Tigers host Minnesota State Mavericks for a pair of games Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Dutchmen travel to Vermont to take on the Catamounts Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.

Minnesota State vs. Princeton

The Tigers come into the weekend as one of the hottest teams in the country. After winning their first five games of the season, the Mavericks are 5-6-2. This series is a pick’em series, but I will go with Princeton Friday night.

On Saturday, I think the Mavericks come out firing. They have out shot their opponents 205-133 this season. I believe Minnesota State earns a split in the second game.

Union vs. Vermont

This should be a fun series between two teams that certainly have been surprises this season. It should be a battle of offense vs. defense. Union is averaging four goals per game while Vermont is only allowing 2.25 goals per game. I think the Dutchmen take advantage of a much quieter Gutterson Fieldhouse with the students gone Saturday night.

Sunday games are also tricky but with it being the second game in 24 hours I expect it to be a low scoring affair the second time around. Vermont who has been getting stellar goaltending all year avoids the sweep.

  1. been waiting a while for union to have a shot at a top ranked team, although not sure how impressive uvm has really been despite being in the top ten – listening to tonights’s game, one thing seems clear – union is taking it to a numerically tougher opponent and the trend they have been establishing is one reminiscent of their champ. season a few years ago – i keep saying that – i remember it like it was yesterday – it sure seems they have a chance to make really strong run again – ND and BU will be the true litmus tests – if they perform well they should be the ecac front runner and ncaa team to beat again

    • I was at game one. UVM is pretty good. For the first 13 minutes of period 2, they dominated U, then the roof caved in. U seems very fast and they get to the puck quickly. They are tenacious around the net, and they are getting good goaltending. A mix for success.

        • It’s going to be a great afternoon against North Dakota! Go U! Hoping for home ice in the playoffs this year and can’t say I haven’t thought about Lake Placid :)

  3. Its way to early to make predictions. Too much talent in the ECAC. All we can say is that the Dutchmen are off to a good start. This is not the 2013/2014 team which was top 2 in scoring and defense and everything else. January 1 is a new year. Some ECAC teams in the past have collapsed while others have made a run. Lets not count our chickens. One step at a time. First goal, home ice (top 8) and maybe first round bye (28 points – we have 17)
