WCHA Picks: Jan. 12-13

Ferris State at Lake Superior State

Sean: With two teams failing to pick up wins, I feel like Game 1 of this series is going to be a big one. Win Friday, take confidence into Saturday and get the sweep. Bulldogs 3-1, 2-1

Jack: A pair of teams both struggling. LSSU has won just once in their last eight games while Ferris hasn’t won since early December. Seems like a wash, and a split. Lakers 3-1, Bulldogs 4-2

Bowling Green at Northern Michigan

Sean: Huge opportunity for the Falcons to make a move in the WCHA standings and gain some separation from the Wildcats. Falcons have been playing well lately and are ranked, and I think they are playing some of their best hockey of the season. Falcons 4-2, 3-2

Jack: A big series between the second and third ranked teams in the conference. BG, in second, is currently three points ahead of third-place NMU. I have a funny feeling this won’t be resolved this weekend. Split. Wildcats 3-1, Falcons 5-2

Alabama Huntsville at Alaska Anchorage

Sean: Another weekend in Alaska for the Chargers. Another split seems like it’s on the way. Chargers 3-0, Seawolves 2-1

Jack: The Chargers salvaged a split against Alaska, while the Seawolves still have just one win on the season. Part of me feels like they’re due here, so I’m picking another split. Seawolves 4-2, Chargers 4-2

Minnesota State at Alaska

Sean: The Mavericks biggest opponent weekend is themselves, and I think they’ll be prepared to continue they’ll roll, even with a motivated Alaska team. Mavericks 3-2, 5-0

Jack: The Mavericks keep rolling. They swept UAA last weekend and I’m expecting more of the same against the Nanooks, who are running into a freight train. Mavericks 3-1, 6-2

Bemidji State vs./at North Dakota

Sean: I love home-and-home series, it’s great for the rivalry and it gets both fan bases involved. If teams are close enough to make it sustainable, I think there should be more. This is a prime example of that and I foresee and tough-fought split. Beavers 2-1, Fighting Hawks 3-2

Jack: This regional rivalry is always a ton of fun, especially when North Dakota fans try and pack the Sanford Center in Bemidji. Lots of contrasting colors of green! The Beavers are playing so well that I think they extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games during the home leg of the series before losing the game at the Ralph on Saturday. Beavers 3-2, Fighting Hawks 5-3
